11 Bizarre Beauty Tricks That Actually Work

It’s time to get creative. When we were researching this story we were a little sceptical too, but after testing each and every one, consider us converted.  Here, eleven of the most peculiar beauty secrets out there. From beetroot juice to coconut and olive oil, prepare to be amazed.

1. Cream-ify Your Powder Eye Shadow or Blush

Can’t find your favourite eye shadow or blush in cream form?  Not to worry, we’ve found a solution.  Try mixing it with a little Vaseline for an instant radiant, creamy effect. 

2. Make Your Nail Polish Dry Faster


Let’s face it, there’s nothing worse that a smudged mani.  So if you’re in a hurry after an at-home job, simply submerge your fingers in cold water for a few minutes and they’ll come out touch dry.

3. Reduce Puffy Eyes with Potato Slices

Who would have thought the humble potato could work such wonders on tired puffy eyes? Put a potato in the fridge for 30 minutes and once chilled, cut 2 thin slices and place over closed eyes for 20 minutes. 

4. Olive Oil as Eye Make Up Remover

Come home from a night out to find that you’ve run out of eye make up remover?  That’s ok, it turns out that olive oil is even more versatile than we thought. It works a treat to remove stubborn eyeliner and mascara and it is both gentle and hydrating too.

5. Avoid Unsightly Under-Eye Mascara Marks


Prevent stray mascara marks under your eyes by placing the back of a spoon under your eye when applying to your bottom lashes.

6. Fix a Broken Lipstick

So you’ve broken your favourite lipstick. Never fear, not all is lost.  Using a match or lighter, melt the top layer of the lipstick that is still attached to the tube the gently place the broken piece back onto it.  Carefully melt the outer edges of the joined section and place it in the fridge for half an hour to set.

8. Coconut Oil as Lip Balm


Can’t find your lip balm?  Make a beeline for the kitchen.  Coconut oil does wonders for the lips – it’s incredibly moisturing and also tastes and smells good.

9. DIY Matte Nail Polish

This one’s a goodie. Add a few teaspoons of bi-carb soda to your top coat and give it a really good mix. Apply over your patent nail colour for an instant matte-effect finish.

10. Beetroot Juice as a Lip Stain

By far one of the most bizarre beauty tricks we’ve heard but hey, why not?! Next time you want to do a dark berry lip, try using beetroot juice as a lip stain instead. Warning: as we know beetroot has some serious staying power so be sure not to get any around your mouth

11. Teeth Whitening with Strawberries


Yes, you read that right. Strawberries can be used to whiten teeth thanks to their acidity.  Just take a ripe strawberry, rub it onto your teeth until it forms a paste-consistency, and then use your toothbrush to brush your teeth.  After a couple of goes you should notice your pearly whites become gradually whiter. Be careful not to over do it though, we suggest using strawberries no more that a few times a week otherwise the acidy can become too much.
