Candles can completely transform the feel of your home, uplift your mood and mentally transport you to a dreamier location. And while we shift our cosmetics and clothes throughout the year, candles also require a seasonal update. Whether it’s the boost of warmth on a gloomy winter night, or something cool and fresh on a humid day, our seasonal candle edit will have you covered, no matter the weather.

WINTER

Maison Balzac’s La Chapelle was made in tribute to the serenity of the many small churches the creator Elise Pioch grew up with throughout France. Elise also lived in a gorgeous church in NSW that we visited her in when we profiled her. Infused with suitably religious notes of heady incense and myrrh, as traditionally used in Mass, it’s warming and totally cosy – a delight on a wintry evening.

Diptyque’s Orange Ambre Candle brings some citrusy zing to awaken our senses during the gloomy winter weather. A mixture of fresh and sweet, delicious tonka beans add a gourmand flavour, whilst the blend of citrus, aniseed and vetiver give the candle a bright and refreshing edge.

Soft yet sharp, Tom Ford’s Tobacco Vanille candle was inspired by nights at London’s exclusive and luxurious clubs – think leather, cigarette smoke, whiskey, and you’ve got the picture. For those afraid of sweet scents, don’t be afraid of the mention of vanilla – the tobacco and woody notes keep it from becoming too cloying.

SPRING

Created especially for calming the spirits and clearing the mind, the Flores Lane Meditation Candle is perfect for getting you in the zen zone. With sea salt and white sage, this pared-back, minimalist fragrance captures the feel of windswept serenity and the purity of Mediterranean sea air.

With hints of lily and citrus, the Cocolux Bergamot, Lily & Moss Candle is revitalising, illuminating the room with an uplifting freshness. Moss and bergamot elevates this airy scent into an earthier, green dimension. Imagine sitting under a lush canopy of trees in the Amazon forest – that’s the feel with this beauty.

Infused with Endota’s relaxing Signature Blend Essential Oil, this candle (designed by Wicks and Stones) is embellished with a charged malachite gemstone – known for creating  an atmosphere of serenity and zen-like calm. The scent itself is a herbal scent lover’s dream, spiked with mandarin peel, bergamot, lavender, geranium, patchouli and ylang ylang. Perfect to unwind with after a day at work.

A vibrant burst of raw wood sage (with a pinch of sea salt), the classic Jo Malone London Wood Sage & Sea Salt candle fills the room with a bold luminosity. The wood sage adds a deeper, foresty twist to an otherwise clean and fresh candle scent. It bottles the carefree joy you feel right after a dip in the ocean.

SUMMER

The Lumira La Primavera, designed by Almira Armstrong, is intricately designed and housed in stunning hand-crafted glass. Opening with a vibrant burst of citrus notes, the candle transitions into a gorgeous bouquet of jasmine and lily flowers, set against cashmere musk. Depth and delicious spiciness is added by vetiver, moss and patchouli.

Candles don’t come much more indulgent than Rodin’s Olio Lusso. Free from the constraints of any container (#zerowastelife), the Rodin candle burns inwards so you’ll never have to worry about wax spillage. Sharp neroli notes are softened by delicate jasmine, presenting a duality of boldness and purity. Totally luxurious and perfectly seasonally appropriate.

Freshness is the order of the day with SOH Melbourne’s Verdant, the aptly-named green blend of jasmine, iris, lime and grass. Add in seasalt and you’ve got a wave of aquatic freshness right in your room. Simple and sophisticated, it’s a minimalist’s dream candle.

You won’t need a beach party invite with Maison Margiela’s Beach Walk Candle. Creamy coconut milk and soft musk evoke the warmth of a summer day spent beachside, while invigorating lemon and crisp pink pepper add some pep – imagine walking along a sandy shore with a cool cocktail in hand.

AUTUMN

Darkly luxurious, the earthy scent of sandalwood in Diptyque’s Santal candle is ideal for those early autumn evenings with friends when balminess gives way to the new season’s chill. The addition of tuberose adds some soft prettiness to this spicy beauty.

When the leaves are falling and the weather starts to chill, you’ll be yearning for a candle bringing a little summer sweetness. Inhale Mor’s Peony Blossom Deluxe Soy Candle and it’s like you’ve walked into a lush fruit garden: think notes of orange, mango, strawberry and pineapple. A chic update on often too sweet fruity candles, the inclusion of peony and lily give this soft and feminine candle some depth.

Yes, the days are getting shorter and the nights darker, but Cire Trudon’s SIX remains a vibrant delight. Walking on the bright side of life will be easy with bright bergamot and gardenia, balanced beautifully by delicious vanilla and ylang ylang. It’s sure to evoke memories (or daydreams) of a romantic getaway somewhere tropical…

Year-long summers on tropical islands are possible with Moiya’s Amour candle. This candle is a radiant fruity-floral composition built on a warm musky, vanilla base. With refreshing cucumber and apple, alongside with stunning gardenia, rose and peach, it’s the perfect feminine candle to add a little sunshine to a chilly autumn..
