MAX RF - Fractional Radio Frequency Facial Review

Beauty writer, Chrisanthi Kaliviotis, road tests Sydney’s Bondi Junction Laser Clinic’s MAX RF – a ‘fractional radio frequency’ facial rejuventation treatment, with impressive results.

"Clutching onto the last of my 20s, (yes the big 3-0 is impending) I have begun to obsess over my skin. Minutes spent at the dreaded magnified-mirror have become far more frequent, as I begin to notice patchy pigmentation or enlarged pores that feel like they appeared overnight. Whilst I can claim to have good skin for someone my age, the trifecta of stress, a rather serious Vitamin-D-addiction and sometimes lax beauty routines (usually following a few too many summer Rosé’s) mean that, of late, my skin has been looking lackluster, dull and suffering the effects of hormonal imbalance.

When I was offered to road test the new Max RF – Laser Clinics’ wondrous and rather genius new facial rejuvenation – I jumped for beauty joy. With unhappy, tired skin I trotted along to their Bondi Junction branch, apprehensive, but excited for my new face to unfurl.

The treatment employs a clever combination of dermal stamping with radio frequency. Super fine needles are used to penetrate the skin, with fractional radio frequency (RF) causing a controlled thermal damage, which encourage the collagen fibres to contract without overheating. This then creates a “trauma”, activating the natural wound-healing response in our skin which compels our cells to produce brand-spanking, sexy new collagen and elastin. As this new collagen is stimulated, the skin in turn becomes healthier, firmer and refined, resulting in a more even skin texture and placating a profusion of different skin conditions. For those suffering acne scarring, stretch marks, large pores, loose or sagging skin, uneven skin tone, dull skin or fine lines and wrinkles (so pretty much all of us) – Max RF is your skin saviour.

The clinic is as you would desire; modern, sleek and most importantly clean. Warm, welcoming faces are in abundance, and I am introduced to my Skin Specialist for the day, Carina Gross. Carina boasts all the qualities I would hope for in a skin therapist: sweet, humorous (a feat which she tells me is rare for Germans. See? Funny.) honest, and most importantly, knowledgeable. She brings 19 years experience under her big beauty belt, another wonderful safety blanket to wrap myself in during my initial pre-treatment fret. I'm actually rather nervous, not for the pain or procedure itself, but for the aftereffects or a - God-forbid - allergic reaction (see: the story of my life). After pestering poor Carina with a deep divulgence of every allergic reaction I’ve ever had, she assures me that since no chemicals are actually going into the skin, an allergic reaction will not ensue. The first tick of many is this treatment’s suitability for all skin types. With a mental “phew!”, I lie down in the chair and away we go…

Firstly, a numbing cream is applied all over the face, which takes about 20 minutes to act. Once my face is anaesthetized, numb and happy; Carina proceeds to move gently around all areas of my face with a handpiece which contains tiny needles suspended in a roller, going over each area twice. It’s fairly pain-free, the only noticeable feeling is a slight sensation of tiny pricks; think the tiniest of pinpricks, for a mere split-second. That’s it. Another positive (particularly for those with an aversion to anything of the needle variety), is there is absolutely no blood. With the radio frequency coagulating the blood immediately, there is no bleeding on the skin. Insert second “phew” moment.

Upon leaving the clinic, my skin appeared almost normal, albeit for a minor pink tinge and puffiness, like I had been slightly smooched by the sun. Nothing major, and I continued about my day normally. The numbing, however, did continue for quite some time after, and proved most amusing (note: be wary drinking water as spillages ensue). Waking up the next day any signs of pinkness and puff had faded and it was beauty business as usual. There was a slight roughness under the fingertips and miniscule black dots from the stamping, however this was only noticeable on (very) close inspection. To the naked eye my skin seemed normal. Such aftereffects - all part of the healing process - were appeased with products from the in-house skincare range ‘Skinstitut’, and disappeared after five days. My aftercare involved spritzing and slathering; spraying the Multi-Active Mist followed by a good dose of the Rejuvenate 15 Serum, which tingled for a fleeting moment then quickly subsided.

One week down the beauty track, and my skin is positively glowing. I have a youthful plumpness (yippee) and a fresh, glowing and shiny complexion (double yippee). The texture is smooth and pores appear minimized, almost non-existent. The best part? Skin flattery has been blissfully free-flowing from all directions. Despite not having any major skin concerns, Max RF has injected a youthful verve back into my complexion, addressing my desire for plumpness and rejuvenation. Because who doesn’t want gorgeous, glowing skin?"
