It’s official. Spring has sprung. And we all know what that means… Racing season is almost upon us. The next couple of months will play host to a series of seriously glamorous events. Events where we are suddenly required to look our absolute glossiest trackside – which is no mean feat, after a winter of social hibernation. We are required to emerge from the seasonal chrysalis, looking bronzed, rested, glowing, modeling in a variety of on trend fashion options.

Of course, this also means unsheathing flesh that has been safely encased in stockings and knits all winter, and coming up with clever, chic hair and makeup looks that will also last the distance – from the taxi to the track. Naturally, a task like this requires militant planning in the fashion and beauty stakes. Sigourney – who happens to be a Spring racing veteran, has mapped out a plan to help get you to the Birdcage looking nothing short of win.

ONE MONTH OUT– TWEAK YOUR DIET

It’s still chilly in most areas, so a juice cleanse is probably not sounding that appealing. Instead, try a meal delivery service that gives you nutritious well-balanced meals and cuts down on your prep time. When I have a special event coming up or I’m simply too busy to think about planning healthy meals, I outsource to Eat Fit Food. They have an awesome 10 day clean and lean program that can kickstart you to better eating habits, minus the planning headache.

TWO WEEKS OUT – FIND THE DREAM DRESS

Now’s the time to start your search for the ultimate frock – one that makes you look and feel amazing. Thankfully, there are a host of fashion apps out now that make that process even easier. The Hunt is an app that allows you to take a photo of the outfit you’re looking for and people can post responses telling you where to find it.  If you sign up to Like To Know It app and like a picture on instagram that is tagged correctly they will send you an email with click to buy links.

TEN DAYS OUT – SORT OUT YOUR SKIN

If you’ve got the time and the budget book in for a light peel or microdermabrasion – Clear Skincare Clinics have locations all around Australia and are competitively priced. Otherwise, you can always do it at home. Philosophy Microdelivery Triple Acid Brightening Peel is easy to use and sloughs off tired, winter worn skin to reveal an immaculate complexion.

ONE WEEK OUT – HONE THE HEADPIECE

Once you’ve got your dress sorted, you’ll want to start looking for the headwear to go with it. Hats are still trumping fascinators in the style stakes, but they are relatively expensive purchase for something you may only wear once. Floral crowns and hairpieces are a lovely idea and will leave a sweet-smelling waft whenever you walk by. Last Melbourne cup I ordered a custom-made floral piece from Maggie May Flowers in Bondi – I told her the colours in my dress and she made something truly unique and special.

FOUR DAYS OUT – SCRUB YOURSELF SENSELESS

It’s time to attack those limbs that have been hiding from the light all winter. Start with a brisk dry body brushing on dry skin. Start with long strokes from your feet up towards your heart. Do your hips and torso, then your hands and arms (always towards your heart – this helps your circulation get pumping). Then wet your skin and turn the shower off and get to work with a sugar or salt scrub like MOR Marshmallow Sugar Crystal Body Scrub to really slough off any dead skin cells. Give yourself a vigorous dry off with your towel and pop on your favourite body cream to nourish skin and leave it glowing.

THREE DAYS OUT – BRIGHTEN YOUR SMILE

Whitening toothpastes have come a long way since the old baking soda formulations of old. Colgate has just released their fastest whitening toothpaste to date – Colgate Optic White Express White – which whitens teeth in just three days. Its enamel safe formula has twice the hydrogen peroxide (which is the ingredient dentists use) as regular Optic White, so get brushing to get those whites pearlier than ever.

TWO DAYS OUT – BRONZE YOUR BODY

Now that you’ve sloughed off that scaly winter skin, you’re safe to get down to bronzing business. To ensure the most natural result, enlist the help of an expert (we like Spray Toniqs – as they have several different formulations which can be custom-matched to your skin tone). If you’re going to DIY it, then the most goof-proof application is with a mousse like ModelCo One Hour Tanning Mousse and their Blend Buffing Mitt. The tinted formulation allows you to see exactly where it’s going and the mitt helps you to buff it into the skin, preventing finger streaks and smears.

ONE DAY OUT –NAIL THAT MANI

To ensure your talons are trifecta-ready try a “weekly nailpolish”. The latest innovation from the people who brought us Shellac, Vinylux is a nail polish with gel qualities and staying power. While it doesn’t last quite as long as a gel mani, it’s also not as damaging, so a good option if you like to change shades regularly. Watch our video on how to apply, here.  Shades we like for this season? Cityscape, Impossibly Plush and Tropix.

ON THE DAY – HAIR AND MAKEUP TO LAST

The trick to long lasting hair and makeup is laying the foundations. For hair – you need to start with a gutsy mousse, like O&M Rootalicious Root Lift Mousse,  then get to work with a hot tong and lashings of Evo Gangsta Grip to really set your style. For makeup – invest in a primer for foundation (we like Laura Mercier Protect as it has an SPF 30) and also an eye base like The Balm Put a Lid On It Eyelid Primer – it will set your eyeshadow to budge-proof. Go over any liquid lines with a dark powder eyeshadow to set those and that should see you ready to race. See you in the marquee!

Thanks for the wonderful tips, Beauticate! Love the liquid liner trick – I have recently started experimenting with going over my pencil liners with a dark eyeshadow (a tip I learnt from Estee Lauder!) . Will try this next time I’m doing a cat flick.

I think whitening toothpastes do make a difference- you just have to use them regularly. I had laser whitening done once and it made my teeth so sensitive- never again.
