We have all been told that beauty begins on the inside with a healthy body and mind. While eating nutrient dense foods fuels our body and promotes healthy hair and skin, and exercising releases endorphins (happy hormones), beauty supplements are handy little additions to a well-rounded lifestyle. Gold Coast Beauticater Gracie Clough trialled a wide range of beauty supplements and narrowed down the best so you don’t have to.
Best for: Maximum Glow
"This Acai flavoured syrup contains a high concentration of an ingredient called glutathione – or, as I choose to call it, the glow giver. Glutathione is present in many great skincare brands and assists in smoothing out the skin’s texture, eliminating fine lines and making the skin appear radiant and youthful. Also present is Hyaluronic Acid – the plumping and hydrating powerhouse. Fountain claim that within a week my complexion will be glowing, however I notice my skin appears more radiant after just two days. (Can I own a lifetime supply please?) I look forward to jumping out of bed in the morning so that I can mix two teaspoons of this liquid gold into some fresh juice or a green smoothie."
Best for: Curing the 3pm slump
"Miss Vitality is a naturopathic beauty supplement brand that focuses on skin health and eliminates toxins and free radical damage. I find myself reaching for a cup of this vitamin-enriched tea to curb afternoon munchies and, unlike my favourite chocolate, it is sugar free (and caffeine free, too). I am pleasantly surprised with how delicious Clean Tea is and I enjoy several cups a day. This tea is filled with certified organic Barberry, Peppermint, Lemongrass, Rosehips, Chamomile and Vanilla Bean to name a few. These hard working ingredients ensure the tea is detoxifying, anti-fungal, calms the nervous system and aids in digestion."
Best for: Stopping the ageing clock
"Did you know that our collagen begins to deplete by 2% each year once we reach our mid-twenties? (Yikes!) Collagen is the protein that creates the building blocks of our tissues and is the second most abundant substance in our bodies, next to water. Not only does collagen make skin look more youthful, it also aids in muscles repair and recovery and assists with gut health. The Blueberry Vida Glow Collagen Powder taste like a refreshing mild Blueberry cordial and is enjoyable to sip on (between one and three times per day is recommended). The Blueberry collagen powder has all the benefits of a regular collagen powder with added Vitamin C and anti-oxidants thanks to the little blue fruit."
Best for: Triple Threat Benefits
QSilica Intensive Skin, Hair and Nail Tablets
"I like to refer to the QSilica Intensive Skin, Hair and Nail tablets as the perfect hat trick. These high strength vegan friendly tablets are loaded with colloidal silica, zinc and biotin; ingredients our skin, hair and nails thrive on. After chopping my hair into a Lara Worthington lob last year, I find I struggle to grow my hair past the ‘mid-length’ stage, so I begin to reach for these tablets to speed up the process. I particularly like how only one dose per day is required – life can get so busy that I find taking multiple doses of products tends to slip my mind from time to time."
Best for: A natural approach
"or those after something to cleanse the system naturally, look no further than Weleda’s Organic Birch Juice. Weleda recommend starting the cleansing program at the beginning of spring or autumn (so, good timing). Although the herbal taste is not unpleasant, I find the cleansing juice to be a more enjoyable mix with a cup of green tea rather than in plain water. They recommend this cleanse be taken for 3-6 weeks in order to receive maximum benefits. I find by week four Weleda’s concoction of organic birch leaves and lemon purify my skin and I feel rebalanced as promised."
Best for: A luxe experience
"When I heard Alexander Wang asked for Cilk Rosewater for his event in Paris, my ears pricked up. This pretty pink concoction contains antioxidants, anti-inflammatory phytochemicals and vitamins that assist in anti-ageing, digestion, cleansing and detoxification to name a few. This refreshing rosewater has the usual floral note suspects but also contains hints of vanilla and I love the taste. I find it super simple to incorporate into my daily routine – all I need to do is add 5-10 drops into filtered mineral or sparkling water. This is great because I find drinking plain water a little boring. I put Cilk in a glass water bottle in the morning and top it up over the day for a subtle rosy hit. The gorgeous minimalistic packaging made for a pretty cute Insta monochrome flatlay pic, too."
“I’ve been a long time user of Super Elixir and I love it. Elle Macpherson and Dr Simone Laubscher’s blend of 45 whole food ingredients contains mostly alkalising greens like wheatgrass, spirulina, kelp and aloe vera as well as cancer-busting turmeric and antioxidant-rich pomegranate. I’ll either blend it into a smoothie in the morning or just shake it up with water as a mid-afternoon pick-me-up. It tastes slightly sweet and fruity but not in a fake way. The gritty texture is a little disconcerting when it’s in water but you get used to it once you start noticing the benefits - brighter eyes, clearer skin and the energy boost is SO much better than what I get after a latte. It doesn’t come cheap, but - as I’m sure Elle would reason - what price do you put on your health? A sachet starts at $49 for a 150g trial pack and goes right through to the $250 top-of-the-line golden canister - which was designed by cosmetics doyenne and perenially-fresh-faced Aerin Lauder. It contains a whopping 600g of alkalising greens and is a seriously sleek and glamorous way to take your vitamins.” - Sigourney
