A cupid’s arrow away from the long-stemmed roses and fluffy teddy bears, we are celebrating Valentine’s Day sans le mush, with our favourite beauty moments from Rom Coms throughout the decades. From the Queen of Romantic Comedies, Ms. Julia Roberts (who features in two of our favourites) to our own home-grown Rose (Byrne that is), we have plucked the best beauty and hair from the funny and oft romantically challenged darlings of the silver screen.

BEAUTICATE LOVES RICHARD GERE AND JULIA ROBERTS IN PRETTY WOMAN (1990)

Pick up the rose petals and charge the champagne to the ladies who made us laugh and cry; love (and laughter) is in the air.

NOTTING HILL – ANNA SCOTT

Like Julia Roberts, Anna Scott is America’s Golden Girl, lighting up the big screen with a bouncy, blow-waved mane, a wallet boasting only big bucks (the million dollar variety) and most importantly thatsmile – far-reaching, sweeping, glistening and white. Follow the textbook looks by injecting some poof into your mane with a root booster, paint eyes in cocoa hues and most importantly (try) to recreate those lips, using a nude, lip-enhancing lip liner like ModelCo’s. She is after all, just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to lover her. Sigh.

LOVE ACTUALLY – JULIET

The beautifully ethereal and most eloquently spoken Juliet is just lovely; an English rose who bloomed in the hilarious romanticism that was Love Actually. Dabble in the beauty of this darling with a dewy and radiant complexion, a pretty shell-pink pout and of course, big yet fastidiously shaped brows. Juliet, you are perfect to us too.

WHEN HARRY MET SALLY – SALLY ALBRIGHT

Like Julia, Meg too, is the darling of romantic comedies; When Harry Met Sally has become Rom Com folklore, with the quirky and unceasingly cute Sally Albright becoming one of the most eminent characters in cinematic history. Simmer like Sally with flicked-out, slightly undone curls whilst paring down the garish 80s tones (bright blue eye shadow – eek!) and using a softer sky blue harmonised with a gentle blend of pink across cheek and lip. We’ll have what she’s having.

SARAH AND SEBASTIAN LOVE YOU THE MOON AND BACK GOLD RING

PRETTY IN PINK – ANDIE WALSH

Long before the Delevingne’s or Ms. Miller, Andie Walsh in Pretty in Pink was the original ‘it’ girl of the 80s. Ringwald’s Andie became somewhat of a pin-up, a cult character whose fashion and beauty notes were mimicked for years to come, with the film a great influencer in modern popular culture. Flashback to Andie’s signature look with a red rinse, offset with pink-hued (naturally) beauty, flushed cheeks and a swipe of salmon on lips. You’ll be pretty in pink in no time.

HOW TO LOSE A GUY IN 10 DAYS – ANDIE ANDERSON

Kate Hudson’s Andie Anderson was equal parts charming as she was hilarious. The quirky and perennially glow-y Andie radiated, that lemon dress moment a most magical one which made us weak at the knees. So slather on some luxe tanning mousse, straighten those locks and pout away in a glossed-up fuchsia. Maybe Mr. McConaughey will fall head over heels for us, too.

PRETTY WOMAN – VIVIAN WARD

If there were one romantic comedy character who reigned above the rest, it would be Julia Roberts’ Vivian Ward. Forever iconic, images of the Pretty Woman’s fairytale-like transformation from cheap call girl to classy lass are etched into the Western consciousness. Follow Vivian’s more refined guise with strong, arched brows, big, bouffant cascades of curls and a slick swipe of scarlet to frame those effervescent pearly whites. In the words of Ms. Ward, she really was “Cinder-fuckin-rella”.

BRIDESMAIDS – HELEN HARRIS

With a meticulous blow-wave that curls and coils in just the right places, dainty little features and lashes that flutter ever so often, Helen is the quintessential Little Miss Perfect. In need of a big slice of humble pie (extra cream), Helen’s beauty notes are most desirable. Makeover like Helen with va-va voom but perfectly preened curls, chocolaty eyes and natural, earthy hues on face and lip. To the Bridesmaid who boasts it all, we salute our flute o’ bubbles.

50 FIRST DATES – LUCY WHITMORE

There was no denying we all fell in love with Lucy; endowed with that Barrymore charm, Lucy is sugar ‘n’ spice personified. Her beachy, pared-down guise reflected the down-to-earth Lucy fittingly. With saccharine accents, swipe a sweet-hued gloss across lips and a radiant tinted moisturiser across face to appear honey-dipped, complete the look with scrunched-up, seaside waves care of a gritty, sea salt spray like Evo’s. Waking up looking like this 50 times over is just fine with us.
