We’ve all had that internal fight with ourselves when it’s horrible outside. You know how much better you will feel after a bit of exercise but sometimes the pull of the couch is too tempting. But studies have found that exercising in cold months not only prevents the sneaky winter kilo-creep but also boots the mood and wards off SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder). To keep the level of living-room-comfort once you step out the door, it’s all about being prepared. Here, we look at two workouts worth kitting up for and the best way to do it.

INDOOR: HOT YOGA

One of the most satisfying ways to steam up during winter is to do a heated yoga class. In most power vinyasa classes the rooms are heated to a cosy 30 degree which can help you extend your stretch and detox your system.

Dress in light fabrics (like Adidas by Stella McCartney pull on sports bra) that wick sweat away from the body so you won’t feel the chill when you step outside. Merrell All Out Bold shoes are a great option for yoga: you can slip them on and off easily – or even wear them while doing your downward dog to avoid dreaded CTC (Chilly Toe Cramp).

To combat the sudden heat, don’t forget deodorant and a light moisturiser that won’t encourage breakouts when you sweat. Post class, lather up with the One Hot Yoga Shampoo, Conditioner and Body Wash and then peace out with Natio Meditation Body Balm and Subtle Energies Aura Protection Mist. A slick of RMS all natural lip to cheek balm (made from coconut oil) will leave you feeling as pure on the outside as you feel within.

OUTDOOR: HIKING

Weather getting you down? A recent study by the University of Tampere in Finland found that exercising outdoors leads to better sleep and a greater sense of well-being than indoors, so if you can muster it, a brisk walk through the bush could be just what the doctor ordered.

Layering is the secret to staying comfortable when hiking outdoors. Wear a synthetic or wool undergarment rather than cotton that will keep you dry, while insulating and keeping your body heat in. A second long sleeve top in wool or fleece followed by a waterproof shell to protect you from the elements. The S’well water bottle is a double walled stainless steel non toxic bottle that Keeps drinks cold for 24 hours and hot for 12 and for every bottle from the Wood Collection sold a tree will be planted.

You’ll need suitable hiking shoes – Merrell Decora Chant Boots are fully waterproof with a snuggly fur lining that feel as inviting as Uggs but as supportive as runners. They’re insulated and flexible so they don’t feel like clod-hoppers, meaning you can traverse mountain ranges and slippery muddy slopes with ease.  Smear on a natural sunscreen, commune with nature with a bush-friendly deodorant like Malin + Goetz Eucalyptus deodorant.
