The eyelash curling step is often skipped, perceived as too hard, too time consuming or too painful, but a simple ten second clamp can give us that eight hours of sleep look that we’re all chasing. And with such a variety available on shelves, there’s a curler out there to suit everyone’s needs. In a bid to narrow down the options, we asked South Australian Beauticater and sleep-deprived new mum Juliette Tuck to give a variety of lash curlers a go (she needs all the eye-opening she can get!) Here’s what she thought…

BEST FOR A WEEKEND GETAWAY

UBU Wicked Winks

“My first foray into creating a soft gentle curl in the morning was the bright neon UBU curler. As it is the lightest curler, I bring it with me for a weekend in Sydney, a handy addition to my travel bag. The spring-loaded action creates exact control and the whole experience is completely pain free – not once does it pinch. My eyes pop like a baby seal all day!”

“One of my favourite makeup artists Charlotte Tilbury is a fan of this traditional curler. The quality is felt when I pick it up – it’s a bit sturdier than some of the others. It features an industrial-designed ergonomic handle that makes it a breeze to use. One quick press on my lashes and I am left with a perfect curve. With a couple of refills included and a protective case supplied, the cult following is well deserved.”

BEST FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS

Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler

“The Japanese designed curler has not only won awards, but is used by celebrities and makeup artists around the world. It’s cleverly created to suit different eye shapes and my almond eyes are left with Shu Uemura’s trademark elongated sweeping curl. I find this curler works really well when I’m wanting to create a dramatic makeup look with a bold, sweeping eyeliner.”

BEST FOR THE WORKING WEEK

QVS Eyelash Curler

“This curler is simply comfortable to use. The design of the handles and spring tension gives me precise control, just what is needed when I’m so close to my eyeball. A natural curl is created easily in ten seconds – perfect for a weekday morning when time is an issue. I’m a new mum so I’m all for ‘ready and out the door’ looks. The result isn’t as dramatic as the Shu Uemura, but for the reason of timing, this curler is a must have.”

BEST FOR SATURDAY NIGHT DRINKS

Ardell Heated Eyelash Curler

“This steps it up a notch with a little technology. While I am slightly concerned about putting a heated curler near my eyes, this lightweight, Tiffany-turquoise and white plastic curler is not hot to the touch. The red pad changes to white in a minute (just add 2 x AAA batteries) so I know exactly when to apply. One application leaves me with fluffy soft lashes and the curl increases as I repeat the process (2-4 times is recommended). This doesn’t get me out the door as fast as the traditional tools above, but is a great weekend makeup treat.”

BEST FOR WHEN YOU HAVE AMPLE TIME TO SPEND

ModelCo Turbo Lashwand Heated Eyelash Curler

“The fluro pink Turbo Lashwand is easy to locate in my makeup bag – one AA battery, a 60 second wait until the indicator light says go and I am ready for lashes that are ‘tested on models not animals’. The main difference is I apply ModelCo Lashextend or Fatlash mascara first before using the wand as I find it works best. The inbuilt comb is perfect to separate my lashes prior to use and a tiny brush is also supplied for cleaning. The trick here is to gently fold back the lashes and hold for 30 seconds, repeat if necessary. All up, it takes about three minute to produce long lasting curl.”

I never knew they made heated eyelash curlers – I always use my blowdryer to hear my eyelash curler and get such dramatic results
