Fashion writer and blogger Kate Waterhouse is always immaculately turned out. Growing up in the public eye, as daughter of racing doyenne Gai Waterhouse, Kate knows about keeping up appearances. She also recently announced her first pregnancy (we thought she was looking rather glowy when we shot this!). We caught up with Kate in her stunning beachside home in Sydney and plied her for her secrets to looking flawless.

“I GREW UP GOING TO THE RACES AND EVENTS WITH MY MUM…

… so I like to get dressed up. It teaches you to dress for the occasion. My earliest memory would be mum getting ready for the races every Saturday. My day for dress ups! I would make a complete mess of her wardrobe, then she would leave and I would be left to clean up. It had better be clean by the time she got home!

KATE'S IMPRESSIVE SHOE COLLECTION FEATURES PLENTY OF LOUBOUTINS, CHANEL, AND YSL.

I WAS ALWAYS INTO SKIN CARE BEFORE MAKEUP…

because mum drilled that into me – she used Thalgo skincare. She’s got amazing skin for her age. She just loves to always look good – she gets up at 2:30 every morning to go to work,  and it’s pitch black but she’ll still put her lipstick and her sunscreen on.

INSIDE KATE'S MAKEUP BAG: M.A.C, MODELCO, GIORGIO ARMANI AND ST. TROPEZ ILLUMINATOR.

I go to The Clinic in Bondi Junction for all my facials and I get a bit of pigmentation so they always try and get rid of that with IPL and sometimes they do a blueberry peel. I get my skincare from them at the moment I’m using Cosmedix Benefit clean cleanser, Dermaquest stem cell 3D complexand Dermaquest stem cell daily moisturising lotion daily. As well as Cosmedix eye cream. For body I like to use KORA rosehip body oil and KORA organic body lotion.

If it’s a big race day I’ll get my makeup done – if I’m in Melbourne I get Blanka Dudas – she’s really good, she does Miranda Kerr and Megan Gale. I actually do my own makeup quite a bit, I’m pretty quick.

For race days, you’ve got to keep it quite fresh because it is daylight so everything shows, so steer away from too much foundation and fake tan and too much of a night time look.

MY MAKEUP LOOK IS FRESH BUT WITH A BIT OF AN EDGE.

I like dewy skin and I like a bit of a bronze smoky eye. I use Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation every day with M.A.C Strobe Cream. On eyes I use M.A.C eyeshadow and ModelCo Lash Xtend or YSL mascara. I curl my lashes with a curler and if I’m going out I put the Shu Uemura half lashes on the ends. It’s amazing what a fake eyelash can do.

I’ve always loved hair and makeup. With my friends growing up, [we were] most definitely the girly girls. We weren’t allowed to wear makeup to school though, but you could wear lipgloss so Lancôme Juicy Tubes were the thing. When I was growing up I loved Kylie Minogue and Jennifer Lopez, but now I always look to timeless beauties like Audrey Hepburn and Sofia Loren.

I have really thin brows so I only really get them done if I have an event or something. I go to Sharon Lee. I use her brow powder in blonde even though I’m a brunette. For hair, I see Amber at Valonz and I love Miss Frou Frou for nails. I get spray tans at Bronzalicious

I LIKE SPORT BUT I’M NOT ATHLETIC…

I do it more because it makes me feel good. I used to train twice a week but my trainer for the last five years, Ben Lucas moved to Flow Athletic so I followed him. We do a lot of flow yoga, spin and TRX. For me, it’s not so much about weight loss, just toning. I find it hard to put weight on. Ben’s very into weights because it’s good for bone density and so we focus a lot on that. I run with Luke and we walk a lot. Sometimes I might do hill sprints with Luke but I kind of jog them while he zips up. I try and go for a run once or twice a week and we go walking most mornings. I think anything is better than nothing so even if I do it for ten minutes I think it’s better than not doing it.

KATE IS DEVELOPING HER BLOG INTO A FASHION WEBSITE

I WANT TO MAKE MY BLOG A FULL FASHION WEBSITE.

I have so many people always asking me questions about fashion. I’d like to make it a site that people can find answers and sort out their wardrobes.

As well as my blog, I’m also doing Date with Kate for the Sun Herald every week. I liked interviewing Dita Von Teese. I thought she would be a little bit scary but she was really interesting and really lovely down to earth. I’ve interviewed all kinds of people, from sportspeople, to actors, from Kim Kardashian to Julia Gillard. I do get nervous but I always say to people it’s like going on a blind date each week because rock up, you don’t know them, you’ve got to make conversation and make them feel comfortable so they’ll open up to you. You mirror what they do and try and bounce back whatever their energy levels are, you try and have the same energy levels and things like that.

I’m always asking a million questions, I guess working at The Herald was a great learning ground for all that sort of stuff. I had some great journalists that gave me a lot of tips along the way.

This year I’m the ambassador for Hardy Brothers jewellery, it’s their 160th anniversary and I remember going shopping there with my grandma so it’s a place I’ve always known since I was a child. They also make the Melbourne Cup, they started making it in 1981 which is the year that my grandfather won it, TJ Smith, my mum’s dad, he was a champion horse trainer.”

Kate Waterhouse is my absolute favourite!! She always seems so lovely and so put together. It’s so nice to see celebrities who take care of themselves! She uses my foundation, too! 🙂 Her house looks gorgeous!
