To celebrate Australia Day and our great tradition of gathering together on the beach (cue salty hair and sunburned noses), I joined two of my closest friends – The Grace Tales’ Georgie Abay and Sugar Mamma Canna Campbell – for a beach picnic with our little ones. When we weren’t prising ice cream tubs out of sticky fingers, I pinned Georgie and Canna (both fashion & beauty gurus in their own right) down and asked them about their favourite Australian buys – and how they manage to look so glamorous when the mercury rises. List at the ready.

GEORGIE

What are your favourite Australian beauty products and why?

“I love every product in the Sodashirange – it feels like I’m in a spa every time I use one of their products. Lanolips is a handbag staple. Milk & Co products for my little girls – I love their Fairy Detangler, which gets all their knots out quickly. Jurlique hand cream – another handbag staple which I use daily. I also love their Rosewater Balancing Mist for a quick pick me up in the middle of the day. Go-T0 skin care by Zoe Foster Blakeis amazing. I use the Go-To Exceptionoil daily. The products are brilliant but I also like how she’s injected so much personality into the brand.”

CANNA AND SIGOURNEY WEAR PAMPELONE DRESSES

Favourite Aussie fashion brands and why?

“Where do I start? Just like beauty, there are too many mention. Scanlan Theodore for timeless pieces, bassike for cool casual wear, Zimmermann for effortless resort wear, Ephemera for swimwear (Nicole does the ultimate black one piece). I could keep going…”

Best thing to do on Australia Day?

“Oysters, prawns and champagne in the sun – my idea of heaven.”

How do you save time beauty-wise during summer?

“I get a spray tan every fortnight as I don’t really lie in the sun – it’s too damaging and I don’t have time to laze around the beach. My mother has always taught me the importance of sun protection – it’s just not worth it. Stacey McPherson comes to my house to do my tans – it’s the ultimate time saver! “Mummy why are you getting painted?” is usually the reaction from my girls who are rather confused by the whole process. I also get lash extensions once a month – it means I don’t need to wear any mascara and even if I leave the house without a scrap of makeup on, I still feel ‘done’. Or at least, don’t get every second person telling me how tired I look. As a working mother, I rarely have time to do my makeup and if I do get a moment to do it, chances are I won’t get time to blend it in properly before someone interrupts me! I don’t wash my hair in the morning – I do it the night before to save time in the morning.”

Do you have any tricks or tips when it comes to hair styling?

“Honestly, my hair is usually the last thing I think about. If I haven’t had time to wash it, I put it back in a bun. Most days, it’s in a bun! I love wearing it out, but it just gets in the way when I’m running around after the girls. I rely on Wella’s System Professional line to keep it in great condition.”

What about makeup – do you have any products or tricks you do on the run?

“I love Chantecaille Foundation – it’s my all-time favourite. And I’ve just started using brow pencil – I wish I’d started sooner. It really defines the face and makes a big difference. If I’m in a rush, it’s Chantecaille foundation, Nars blush and Poni brow pencil. I don’t need mascara because of my lash extensions. Easy!”

What are your three can’t-live-without summer beauty essentials?

“Lash extensions, regular pedicures and spray tans.”

What beauty treatments do you rely on and where do you go for them?

“As well as the tans, Michael Kelly from Edwards & Co colours my hair. Paloma Rose Garcia from Oscar Oscar Salon in Paddington cuts it. The Lash Room in Double Bay for lash extensions. That’s about it. I’m starting to sound rather high maintenance!”

Fashion-wise, what are your summer style go-tos?

I love Pampelone – Holly does such chic resortwear. I live in her dresses over the summer. Marysia Swim and Ephemera for swimwear. Pam Pam Swim in Double Bay for more heavenly designer resortwear – Sara stocks one of my new favourite designers Gül HürgelLem Lem for beach coverups. Scanlan Theodorefor sandals. And a plethora of basket bags. I have them piled up by our front door and use them daily. I also use The Grace Collection neoprene totes – machine washable and so chic and practical.

Who makes the best swimsuits and sunglasses?

I love Solid & Striped, Mara Hoffman, Marysia Swim and Ephemera for swimwear – there are so many brilliant swimwear designers out there so we really are spoilt for choice. I stock up on sunglasses at H&M – I have two small children so designer eyewear is not practical. They get destroyed all the time so I love how affordable and cool the styles at H&M are.

What skincare/suncare products do you use on your kids and why do you love them?

The drawer near our front door is filled with different sunscreen. It’s the last thing we do before we leave the house. I like the spray on sunscreen from Banana Boat. I run after my girls spraying them as they’re not good at sitting still!

CANNA

What are your five favourite Australian beauty products and why?

1. Le Tan Coconut Spray – It smells gorgeous, is soft and milky and leaves my skin feeling smooth rather than heavily greased up….I wish they actually did a body moisturiser like this!

2. Mecca Body Oil – My night time ritual…smells heavenly and helps me sleep soundly.

3. A-Kin Micellar Water – Great for getting make up off quickly without drying out my skin. Feels so clean and fresh afterwards.

4. Skinstitut Glycolic Scrub – I’m not sure if you are supposed to but I use this on my face and I always get comments afterwards about how “fresh” my face looks and if I have recently had some botox…this is a my little secret! Much cheaper than botox too!

5. Axilla Black Chicken Deodorant Paste – not exactly the most glamourous beauty product but seriously great stuff. I found that my previous deodorants were staining my clothes and not lasting the day. This stuff is great and is also a lot safer to use and is only made with organic products…I wonder if that can cancel out the Glycolic acid that I use incorrectly on my face? Hmm….probably not!

Favourite Aussie fashion brands and why?

Scanlan Theodore and Bassike form my capsule wardrobe but then depending on the season, I add in more coloured and fun pieces. Zimmermann are great for their summer dresses and playsuits. They nail the perfect balance of colour & pattern and are so well made. I am definitely a quality over quantity girl and their playsuits stand the test of time, my favourite one I have had for over 5 years and every time I put it on I still love it and get that happy excited feeling like when you wear something new for the first time.

Best thing to do on Australia Day?

Celebrate…with the people who you love, inspire you and support you. And of course be outside.

How do you save time beauty-wise during summer?

Micellar Water, carrying around a mini make up kit in my bag and trying to get as much beauty pampering whilst showering, this includes cleansing, exfoliating, massage oils, hair masks, cleaning my teeth and sometimes even drinking my coffee or green juice!

Do you have any tricks or tips when it comes to hair styling?

I love my GHD, if my hair is styled with a loose curl and looks clean and healthy, I can (sometimes) get away with less make up!

What about makeup – do you have any products or tricks you do on the run?

A tinted moisturiser is always a time saver, but I always put sunscreen underneath followed by some bronzer and mascara…minimal make up but can help you look fresh and healthy especially when under the pump. But if you are seriously time poor, sometimes I wear fake tan on my face which cuts the need for foundation and bronzer…then it’s just mascara, blush and lipgloss.

SIGOURNEY WEARS TANLIINES THE DAWN SWIMSUIT

What are your three can’t-live-without summer beauty essentials?

Tweezers, but only Tweezermanone…I am obsessed with tweezing things, I should be banned from them! The milk spray is so moisturising and then my NARS bronzer….oh can I add some mascara…benefit mascara…I won’t leave the house without mascara!

MECCA SPRAY ON SUNBRELLA IS A GO-TO SUNSCREEN FOR THE GIRLS

What beauty treatments do you rely on and where do you go for them?

I recently “invested” in a BBL, Cutera and Erbium facial at Darlinghurst Dermatology by Dr Natasha Cook and I am seriously loving the results. I’m actually going to do a video on my treatment as I can’t believe the results! It was expensive, but I was at breaking point with my skin looking leathery and it was bring me down every time I looked in the mirror…

Fashion-wise, what are your summer style go-tos?

I always have a good panama hat – they are so classic and versatile… I just purchased a new Nerida Winter one.

CANNA WEARS ZULU & ZEPHYR PLAYSUIT, GEORGIE WEARS BASIKKE SHORTS, SIGOURNEY WEARS BODEN

Who makes the best swimsuits and sunglasses?

I love COS for basics, but absolutely love Marysia, Mara Hoffman and Zimmermann.I am very tempted to buy a Tanliine one piece…so classic but chic! When it comes to sunglasses, I keep only three styles, Cat eye – Prada, Aviator – Ray Ban and Wayfarers. Victoria Beckham…I never lose sunglasses, I take care of them and stick to a signature look.

What skincare/suncare products do you use on your kids and why do you love them?

Le Tan spray in the can when I am tackling Rocco who has decided he doesn’t feel like wearing suncream….I can spray him with it whilst he runs away…it is so satisfying as I can ‘win’ this battle with the radius of the spray…he does wear Actinica during the day on his face (which is what I wear), it is the most effective on the market.

I use Banana Boat sunscreen on my kids but they all complain how oily it is when they go in the water and feel slimy. Is the Le Tan spray less oily? Definitely need a spray for my crazy kiddos!

I was hesitant reading this article in the US (didn’t want to fall in love with a product that doesn’t ship to me), but I couldn’t resist. I clicked on the Rosewater Balancing Mist from Jurlique and immediately saw that they ship worldwide for all my ladies who aren’t Aussies 🙂
