Lately we’ve been hearing all sorts of benefits that come with going long intervals between shampoos – or simply giving it up all together. However, a recent study has revealed the scientific reason behind that weird ache you get on your scalp when you’ve skipped the ‘poo one too many times.

Joshua Zeichner, M.D., a New York City-based dermatologist, told Glamour magazine that your scalp naturally produces oils around your hair shaft, which can encourage the overgrowth of yeast on your scalp. Eek!

The negative effects include inflammation, flakes, itching and skin scales.

“In some patients, inflammation may manifest most with an ache,” says Dr. Zeichner.

But don’t freak out too much. Apparently the yeast is totally normal and is something that is on all our bodies. An aching scalp can also be caused by the tight buns we tie our hair into when we’re trying to disguise our third day old hair. Guilty.

Dr. Zeichner suggests using medicated shampoos from the chemists to treat any yeasty scalp. But remember to use these on your roots, not on the ends of your hair.

“Remember that while these shampoos may wash your hair, they should really be used as scalp treatments.”

Maybe, like everything, it’s about striking a balance. Take a hair cleansing break just long enough to keep strands healthy, but enough times to keep your scalp in check; about two twice a week should do it.

Interesting perspective, especially with so many people raving about shampooing so infrequently
