On colder days, you might be tempted to de-prioritise SPF - but it may actually be the time to get even more focused on skin protection. Just because the sun isn’t burning down on you (thus giving you a sensory reminder to slip, slop, and slap), UV rays continue to cause damage. And your lips are prime for exposure – especially as they start to suffer in windy, cold conditions. So we decided to prep and protect our pouts - here, our best SPF lip balms to keep lips hydrated and happy.

“This neat little balm was just the ticket for those days when my lips were exposed to whips of sand while taking a rugged-up wander on the beach. But, beyond that, I’ve found I actually want Nivea’s Lip Care Sun Protect with me at all times during the brutal winters – in the bottom of my bag, one on the car floor, one at my desk and one even wedged between the couch cushions! It offers an SPF 30 to increase the skin’s natural sun protection, while hydrators and sunflower extract intensifies the quench factor. This magic balm has saved me more than once today, already.”

“Through reputation alone, I know that the formula will be exemplary – but when Bobbi Brown Lip Balm is also housed in this gorgeously sleek tin, it’s no wonder it makes my heart flutter. Formulated with avocado, olive and wheat germ oils, this non-greasy and fast-absorbing balm offers immediate relief to parched lips. The beeswax ensures a smooth application, while the aloe vera works to soothe irritated lips. Although the balm appears light pink in colour, it goes on clear – making it the perfect protective base for any lipstick.”

“I’m a convert to this little beauty – and apparently it’s one of the best-sellers in the Mecca Cosmetica signature line. The Lip De-Lucious SPF 25 Lip Protectant hydrates and conditions my lips thanks to its unique shea butter and hyaluronic filling spheres formulation. In other words, it plumps lips with some serious hydration. Not only does this small little pot of glossy pink tint pack a super hydrating punch, in my eyes, the best part is its fragrance. It reminds me of red gummy lollies. This seriously rates amongst my best SPF lip balms.”

Elizabeth Arden’s iconic Eight Hour Cream has inspired a range of eponymous spinoffs – and, happily, the lip balm iteration is just as lovely as its namesake. Its ingredients list reads like all the supplements you should be taking on the daily (think vitamin C, zinc, calcium, omegas 3 and 6, and more), plus broad spectrum SPF to keep lips in perfect nick. It’s probably the thickest, most nourishing formula of these SPF lip balms, so it’s a winner if you suffer from interminably dry lips.”

“It’s a firmly-established category favourite, but I’m still reaching for FRESH Sugar Tinted Lip Treatment – it’s the sort of lip colour that you can slick on without a mirror and know it will always look fab. Coming in a clutch of pretty hues (there’s a shade to suit every skin tone, not that I have the discipline to stick to just the one bullet), it’s rich in vitamin E and grapeseed oil – and SPF 25 – for a protected and hydrated pout. Dab on cheeks as well for a youthfully glowing blush to match.”
