As warm weather hits, it’s time to re-educate ourselves about sun safety. While we know that sunscreen is vital all year round to protect us from the UVB rays (burning our skin) and the UVA rays (causing premature ageing), it's easy to get out of the slip, slop, slap habit. But now it’s time to turn our sun smarts up a notch, just as the temperature follows suit. Beauticater Gracie Clough, from sunny Queensland, knows all too well the importance of looking after her naturally fair skin. So she tried and tested the top performing body sunscreens – here’s her verdict.

“I love a multi-tasking product. This product is perfect for my fair legs – they just aren’t ready show themselves after being hidden for half the year. The moisturising, non-greasy formula gives me an instant bronze, while also protecting me from UVA and UVB rays. But, the best bit: it doesn’t transfer onto my swimwear or clothing. This sunscreen gives me the sunny-weather confidence boost I need to get back out to the beach for the first time this season. The great thing about this product is that it doesn’t wash off in the sea or pool water; only coming off when I  remove it with soap and water.”

La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL

“It’s no secret that the French develop amazing and effective skincare products; and this sunscreen from La Roche-Posay is no exception. This product is great for my sensitive and dermatitis-prone skin. I spray the sunscreen onto my skin and I’m not prepared for it to be the most water-like sunscreen I have ever used. To say this is simply ‘lightweight’ is a huge understatement. Since I have avoided sunscreen in the past because I dislike the feel of it, this product is my new best friend.”

“This sunscreen feels so luxurious to apply because it’s lightweight, yet has a milky texture and a gorgeous fresh scent that makes me feel refreshed and energised. The spray bottle evenly applies the ultra-fine mist onto my skin with each spritz, making application a breeze. It’s a perfect beach-prep product because of how it moisturised and plump my skin feels immediately after application, making it look radiant. The bright yellow bottle looks gorgeous in my summer beach bag, too.”

Dermalogica Protection 50 Sport SPF50

“This non-greasy sunscreen could easily be mistaken for a luxe moisturiser – lightly scented with the typical spa-like Dermalogica scent, this product leaves me feeling calm and hydrated. Although labeled as a sport sunscreen, I use it as my daily protection because of how deeply it nourishes my dehydrated skin. At times my skin can look dry by the end of the day, but this sunscreen proves to keep all signs of dehydration at bay. This product is super sheer, so it never leaves an obvious white film on my skin, either.”

Invisible Zinc Face + Body Sunscreen SPF30+

“Thanks to Invisible Zinc, I no longer need to look like I’m about to play cricket by wearing fluorescent zinc across my nose. This product is a physical sunscreen rather than a chemical sunscreen, which means UV rays are reflected off the skin as opposed to being absorb into the skin. The natural Zinc Oxide in Invisible Zinc reflects both UVA and UVB rays, so my skin is receiving the utmost protection. It’s not as thick as I envisioned, and instead has a light weight to medium consistency. It’s as invisible and non-white as the name suggests, and my sensitive dry skin is content with the lack of parabens and mineral oils in the product.”

SolarD Daily Use SPF50 Sunscreen

“SolarD sunscreens are designed to protect the skin from UV damage, while ensuring that some light reaches the skin to produce Vitamin D. As I know I am Vitamin D deficient, this sunscreen is a great everyday choice for me. It allows me to protect my skin from premature ageing while ensuring I receive my daily vitamins. The product comes in both a spray bottle and tube, however I use the spray bottle as I find it more convenient. This fragrance free sunscreen is creamy and nourishing and absorbs quickly into my skin, no greasy residue.”

WOTNOT 30+ SPF Sunscreen

“This product protects from both UVA and UVB rays and uses Zinc Oxide as an active ingredient, meaning it is a physical sunscreen. I find this product is quite tricky to squeeze out because of its thick consistency, so it requires me to bring out my muscles (or lack there of). As this product tends to sit on the skin and feel quite sticky, I find it is not ideal for breezy beach days – sand will most certainly stick. Despite the product’s thick consistency and tackiness on my skin, it’s a great alternative for when I want to reduce my chemical load while receiving sufficient UV protection.”

“This classic high-protection product is a beach staple. The SPF50+ sunscreen protects from UVA and UVB rays and is enriched with Vitamin E, so my skin feels hydrated after application. It comes in a convenient spray bottle, which is perfect for quickly spritzing on around the pool and at the beach. It’s 4 hours water resistant, so I swim without the fear of burning through the water. I particularly like how quickly this lightweight sunscreen sinks into my skin and doesn’t allow any grains of sand to stick to me (we all know how frustrating that can be).”

Need something to tan my legs after a winter stuck indoors – how long does it take for Model Co Body Bronze to dry once you apply?
