We’re currently in the thick of the spring racing season, and amid a flurry of fascinators and frocks, we’re also carefully planning the makeup we’ll be sporting trackside this year. In our bid to perfect our spring maquillage, we sat down with celebrity makeup artist Yolanda Lukowski (who has preened the likes of Lara Worthington, Tahnee Atkinson and Harry Styles), for her take on this season’s hottest beauty trends. Yolanda talks the not-quite-pink, not-quite-red lipstick hue she’s loving right now, and the perfect cheek shade to pair with it - plus, the trend she says is so last season…

This spring, all eyes will be on the complexion. “I’m really predicting that flushed cheeks will be coming back this spring,” says Yolanda. “Peachy tones, like your classic NARS Orgasm on the apple of the cheeks – it’s so pretty and so youthful.” Yolanda suggests pairing the look with a fresh hue on the pout. “I love a watermelon lip,” she shares. “It’s funny, but when I think spring, I don’t think pink or red, but watermelon. It’s such a nice tone.” Her pick? NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Rouge Palatin, which Yolanda recently used when making up the beautiful Jessica Gomes for a shoot.

As for the techniques Yolanda suggests we should leave behind this season: “I think we’re over the old contouring look – it’s harsh,” she says. “And stay away from bronzers with too much shimmer. I just feel like they’re a little bit ageing – especially in the sunshine. Let’s move away from that and stick with the fresh colours.”

Forget barely there, no-makeup makeup: you’ll also be seeing a lot more colour at the races this season, but in a pared back, subtler way. “If you want to incorporate more colour, eye pencils are a fantastic trick,” Yolanda explains. “You can use it underneath the lashes or on the inside of the waterline to make your eyes pop.” Yolanda loves to reach for the Marc Jacobs Highliner Gel Eye Crayon: “A beautiful gel pencil that has great colours,” she shares.

If you’re saving your pennies for your dream Melbourne Cup dress and can only afford to splash out on a couple of new beauty bits right now, Yolanda has two recommendations. “Definitely a peach-toned blush,” she shares. “And go and get at least one watermelon-toned lip, because I think you’ll be wearing it a lot this spring. You’ll never get sick of it.”
