A filmic nod to the sirens of old, hair was swept to the side in elegant chignons and more modern, messed up creations. Marion Cotillard was the epitome of fancy French film star, with an ultra-polished, glossed bun which sat to one side, whilst cool girl about (Hollywood) town, Emma Stone, had waved locks creatively pushed across her face with the rest of her hair tucked back loosely. Create the look with a curling tong, strong hair lacquer and lots of bobby pins on board.
The Red Heads made a strong case for a ruby rinse down this year’s Red Carpet; from Emma Stone’s deep, rich auburn to the beautiful (and forever shiny) strawberry blonde of Jessica Chastain; follow the red-filled path and light up your do’ with a semi-permanent, or a wipe on, wipe off colour. If you are a game gal ask your colourist for a permanent red to compliment your skin tone. You’ll set hearts on fire in no time.
Kicking off the bold movement was Australia’s very own darling, Margot Robbie, who most definitely packed a punch with her brilliant tangerine pout. Emma Stone followed suit and offset her now-trademark red hair with a vivid coral lip (Revlon’s Ultra HD Lipstick in Tulip to be exact) whilst Dakota Johnson was the lady in red, opting for a cherry red to match her gown. Swipe a pop red or orange across your pout for instant flash-worthy moments.
We have been besotted by big brows for quite some time now, and the Oscars Red Carpet was no exception. With a minimal maquillage, nominee Rosamund Pike’s brows were a standout feature on her mostly soft and dewy make up look, whilst Margot’s were thick and bushy however still perfectly preened which gave that Old Hollywood injection. Master the bushy brow with a brow brush, combing the hair upwards, then using a definer to fill in the gaps and setting with a gel. Voila.
Buns were bounteous on the Red Carpet, manifest in a myriad of shapes and sizes, some were textured and loose whilst others polished and slick, tied in classy knots. The Dame of the Oscars, Julianne Moore, boasted not only a golden statue, but a most beautiful bun too. Hairstylist Marcus Francis referenced the hair of French movie stars to create a timeless look by pulling hair back into a low, chic chignon. Complete the look with a super side-swept fringe (taking it an extra third of an inch past the eyebrow for the “drama”) and tucking it gently behind the ear.
It was all about the eyes, with statement eyes a go-to look for the screen sirens. From Lupita’s gilded, metallic lids to Sienna Miller’s coveted, Charlotte Tilbury cat-eye creation, eyes quite simply took centre stage (or camera). Create Miller’s exact look with the Charlotte Tilbury Sophisticate Eye Shadow Palette, Rock ‘n’ Kohl Liquid Eye Pencil and Full Fat Lashes to create that filmic feline flick.
If hair wasn’t swept aside, it was swept back, with a rather bushy, brushed-back look on many famous faces. While Scarlett Johansson sported a more slicked, quiff-like brush back, both Rosamund Pike and Australian Queen of the Screen Cate Blanchett opted for a scruffier, textured look with plenty of height. Hair Dame Renya Xydis created Cate’s look with an abundance of Wella Professional products; mimic the mane with a gritty texture clay, a good dose of hairspray and a brush, naturally.
On the other end of the lip spectrum, Oscar pouts were awash in nude tones. Reese, Sienna and Felicity all boasted a nude lip, in shades of sand, biscuit and putty; the natural tone was however not lost amongst the flashing and bright lights with most opting for a high-shine finish. Choose a glossed-up nude hue and line with a lip liner like the one Charlotte Tilbury used on Ms. Miller (see below) for that big, glamorous Hollywood pout.
Pinned-up ponytails dotted the Red Carpet, with the ladies of Hollywood donning both loose, glamorous ponytails and a more slicked, smooth variety. Achieve this look with a spritz of texturizing spray and sweep up hair in a pony which sits about three quarters up your head, choosing to either pull tight a la Jlo or bang it out with a fringe. Use a brush or comb to build volume, create wanted mess and add a little pizzazz to your pony.
