In the leaf-lined streets of Melbourne’s Hawthorn, lies the beauty oasis that is MADE Beauty Space. Sitting snugly behind the lovely Woodsfolk corner store, MADE Beauty Space is boutique beauty with a (beautiful) bang. Beauty writer Chrisanthi Kaliviotis measures the haven on the bliss-scale.

Stepping into MADE Beauty Space, there is something distinctly different from other salons of the same ilk. Against the rustic backdrop of an open-faced white brick wall, sits a sizeable piece of pop art: pretty poppies juxtaposed against a viridescent milieu of turquoise and bottle green make for a floral feeling. You can almost taste spring (even when Melbourne’s most arctic of winter’s bellows outside). The fragrance-filled waiting room is a happy and healing hybrid of scents that tickle awaiting noses with pleasure.

Warm, herbal tea is offered with pretty things aplenty to admire whilst waiting; a far-reaching iridescent rainbow of Nail Polish, neon pots of spiky succulents and cacti, an array of beauty products in glossed-up black bottles; all which gratify the gaze.

The treatment room too, is aesthetically pleasing with a good hipster jab. Coloured beakers sit against sleek white tiles with black finishings, a spherical hanging mirror is simple yet striking, mixing pots, tubes and tubs sit on a teak tabletop. A retro red chair is contrasted by a citron and dove grey rug and the piece de résistance – a large, glowing, paper light which fans above the bed in all its design glory. A mantra of “ACCEPT THE GOOD” hangs in multihued magnitude on the bare wall.

The Tailor MADE Facial is their signature (and most popular) treatment; unlike other facials, the routine isn’t fixed, and as the name suggests, is bespoke for each client, using a unique combination of strictly natural, local brands (Sodashi, O Cosmedics and MV Organics) and custom blends different products. The treatment begins by cocooning you in a soft nest, initiating a space of Zen for the next hour and a half.

The facial obviously varies from lady to lad, however may follow the lines of: a thorough double cleanse, an exfoliation which includes a hot towel-wrapped face and décolletage (applied in a beautifully fluid, sweeping motion) a spot treatment (in case of unwanted facial guests) and then a refreshing, tingling pomegranate enzyme peel brushed on with a blissfully soft brush. A clay mask then follows, and maybe some gentle extractions (again if pesky pimples pop their unsolicited heads up), a serum is smoothed over and massage ensues. A beautiful foot and lower leg massage, with pressure points manipulated in a way only a master can make out – it is both powerful and relaxing, and combined with the aromatic fragrances permeating the room, an undoubted sensory feast.

A standout element is the Sodashi Brightening Mask; painted onto the skin with that incredible brush, it evokes herbal euphoria as a woody waft permeates the room, whilst an upper body massage is given simultaneously, ensuring instant bliss on even the most anxious of souls. Eye cream is dotted, moisturiser smothered and voila – bouncy, glow-y skin.

The facial is both fruitful and fulfilling, while the space itself elicits a wholly halcyon and yet also hip vibe. A sanctuary where you can wallow and be inspired creatively at the same time – it’s beauty innovation at its very best.
