When I first heard about CoolSculpting– a non-invasive fat reduction treatment that freezes away fat – I must admit, I was skeptical. It does sound way too good to be true! Writing about health, I’m constantly bombarded with all kinds of pseudoscientific claims (and a fair share of scams). It wasn’t until I heard from a couple of colleagues who had their own CoolSculpting treatments that I realised it was very legit – and clearly a treatment that was here to stay. I promptly booked in for a consultation and afterwards went on to get my own treatment done.

After my treatment, I was inundated with questions, namely, ‘Does it work?’ So… here goes. Yes, it certainly worked for me. I was very happy with the results from my first treatment. I had been seeing results from around the 8 week mark post treatment but from 12 weeks after treatment the results on my stomach were really obvious. The little stubborn paunch I’d been carrying around since I gave birth to my second baby Lulu was significantly reduced. That’s the thing about CoolSculpting it’s a great way to get rid of those pockets of unwanted fat that are hard to get rid of with diet and exercise alone. It’s not a panacea for overeating and it won’t overhaul your entire body. Rather it’s a targeted solution for those who want isolated contouring but are reluctant to go down a more invasive journey like liposuction. In fact, there are no needles or surgery involved at all.

The technology has evolved with a new generation of applicators and the treatment time has reduced – with each of my treatment cycles taking only 35 minutes now (each treatment cycle can take up to 60 minutes depending on the applicator needed for your particular area). The treatment itself felt a little uncomfortable with cold and tingly sensations for the first five or ten minutes, while the area is freezing, and then it goes numb. After the treatment cycle was complete, the applicator was removed and my treated fat was like a frozen solid block of butter, which is a very bizarre sensation but it didn’t hurt. The frozen lump was then massaged for 2 minutes and it began to soften up and return to normal. The great thing about this stage is that a lot of those fat cells which were frozen have now died and will begin their journey of being naturally removed by my body from this point.

Over the next few days my abdomen was a bit uncomfortable and tender to touch but this passed and returned to normal. Because the dead fat cells take some time to be cleared from the body via the lymphatic system, it takes anywhere from 8 weeks to 12 weeks to see the results of the treatment and true enough, my results are now becoming apparent. They are not as dramatic as last time but my stomach is definitely flatter and the area underneath my bottom has slimmed down slightly. Again, I’m combining my CoolSculpting with healthier eating and 2 to 3 Barre Body classes a week and I’m feeling confident in my swimsuit. Nothing like a bikini-goal to get me motivated!

While that was my experience with CoolSculpting, the treatment is not for every body type so it is important to go to a CoolSculpting clinic for a complimentary consultation and get an understanding of the treatment plan that would be right for you. I have heard that it can reduce subcutaneous body fat in the treated area by up to 27% but I chose to combine my treatments with a clean diet and exercise.
