Awards season comes with the usual red carpet winners. What we’ve learnt to expect aside from Meryl Streep’s predestined Oscar nod, usually reads as follows: the smokey eye, delicately-tonged hair, golden tans and the usual (yet admirable) run list of figure-hugging backless numbers.

While the crowd pleasers are always commended, this year the SAG awards upped the anti in the beauty stakes with a notable nod to the orient. From sleek yet understated origami buns, blunt fan-like ponytails, sharp fringes and cherry blossom lips; these stars weren’t afraid to push the envelope or embrace the fold. Behold, our favorite Japanese-inspired beauty moments.

1. Felicity Jones’ origami bun

Wearing an impossibly delicate shade of baby-shower blush, Felicity gave her look a little edge with a sharp fan chignon. As crisp as the folds in her tailored Balenciaga, nothing says ‘fierce’ quite like the fan bun.

Be sure to invest in a heavy-duty heat spray to avoid breakage after straightening, like the cult classic L’Oreal Elnett Satin Heat Sprayto keep your look on point all night long.

2. Sarah Hyland’s twist

Many argued this twist deserved best bun of the night, Sarah Highland’s Japanese-me twist displays some serious artistry. Paired with a chic winged eye and sleek side part, the ode to the orient is clear with this one.

To avoid fly-aways, carry a clutch-friendly comb like the Kent Pocket Styling Comb to sharpen up come nightfall.

3. Emma Stone’s sharp ponytail and ear cuff

Emma Stone can do no wrong and this ponytail is all kinds of right. Boasting a blunt edge and killer red lip, the ear cuff is the icing on the cake.

Pair a geometric ponytail with a little frosting like the Samantha Wills Earring Cuffs to add an element of femininity to an otherwise androgynous style.

4. Rashida Jones’ Blunt Bangs

No doubt Rashida Jones knows better than most that sporting a blunt fringe or bangs in the middle of summer is no easy feat. If a fringe is your style staple, you’ll be familiar with the usual ‘do’s and don’ts’, but to wear it blunt and ultimately go-geisha, blow dry your fringe with the Mason Pearson Pocket Boar Bristle and Nylon Brush to ensure your fringe stays full for hours on end. It’ll be your new best friend.

5. Rosamund Pike’s textured bob

There is nothing ‘gone’ about this girl, or her killer bob for that matter. Pike’s short-n-sharp do proved its versatility this awards season, with this crumpled number a red-hot winner. A texturizer like Shu Uemura Art of Hair Texture Wave Dry Workable Spray provides an undone yet on-trend ripple effect.
