When you meet Emily Skye, it’s easy to understand why her 4 million Facebook fans love her.  She’s warm, honest and not afraid to tell you about her flaws. It’s refreshing.  During her teens and early 20s she battled the bullies but has since come out on top.

The Brisbane-based fitness entrepreneur has forged a successful career through her cult workout videos and popular health & fitness program, Emily Skye Fit. We met with Emily when she was last in Sydney where we talked all things beauty, including that one time she smothered herself in Coca-Cola.

“I was extremely insecure…

…as a teenager and wasn’t at all happy with myself. Others can tell you that you’re beautiful a hundred times a day, but if you don’t believe yourself it won’t make any difference. At school I got teased about my eyes all the time. I’ve grown to love them now and accept that it’s just me and  they’re unique, but at school I was called “googles” and “frog eyes”. Girls would make frog noises when I would walk past. I really hated school.

I believe it’s important to always embrace who you are and not try to be like someone else. Don’t compare yourself. These are the things that I dealt with, always comparing myself to someone else and always wanting to be like them, trying to change everything about myself. On social media I’m open about it, I like to be myself and I’m not afraid to show my flaws and my mistakes.

EMILY ISN'T AFRAID TO OPEN UP TO HER FOLLOWERS ABOUT HER OWN PERSONAL TRIALS

NO MORE COCA-COLA FOR THIS GIRL - EMILY NOW PREFERS SUN ESCAPE AND ECO-TAN FOR AN EVEN AND HYDRATED GLOW

I once tried smothering myself self in Coca-Cola

then lying in the sun because someone told me it makes your skin tan. Not surprisingly, it didn’t really work.  These days I try not to spend too much time in the sun and instead turn to products like the Sun Escape Hydrating Gradual Tan or Eco Tan Invisible TanEco Tan is amazing; it’s organic, gives you an instant, natural colour and doesn’t rub off on the sheets.

I love my eyebrows and they’re naturally really thick. In fact, I had a mono-brow when I was in high school. I’ve always groomed them myself and I use a brow gel in warm brown by Amy Jean to keep them in place.

I like to exfoliate my face with a soft toothbrush.

It sounds funny I know, but it really works.  It’s great for getting in around your nose, eyebrows and all those areas where oil and dead skin can builds up. At night I use rosehip oil, it feels so beautiful on the skin. I also love coconut oil, which I use for practically everything – to remove makeup, as face and body moisturiser, in my power smoothie in the morning. Coconut everything!

I eat really well, barely ever drink and I’ve never smoked or touched drugs because I want to maintain looking young for as long as I can. I drink loads of water and I think it shows in my skin. My skincare and makeup is organic and it’s a reflection of my lifestyle, which is all about health.

MOROCCANOIL KEEPS EMILY'S LONG LOCKS HYDRATED AND HEALTHY

I swear by Moroccanoil

I apply it when my hair is damp and porous. I put a shower cap over the top and use my hairdryer to heat it up so it absorbs in even more. I’ll then sleep with it in and wash it out in the morning.  I’m always at the gym and sweating all the time so I need to wash my hair a lot, though I try to use dry shampoo as much as I can in between washes. I’ve got this texturizing one, Plump Me Up Dry Shampoo, which I spray in the roots to give my hair volume.

My mum was a really big beauty influence.

She wore a lot of Nutrimetics back then, when she was a consultant for them. I was always getting into her makeup and she’d be going off at me for it.

I wear Inika’s mineral bronzer and Eyes of Horus’ eye shadow, eyeliner and mascara. I like earthy eye shadow shades and always add highlight and contouring to define my eye. I can’t live without Lucas Paw Pawointment for my lips.”

I use eco tan too. I used to use a model co one but eco gives you a really good natural colour, not too orange

As we get older we realise it’s not about anyone else. It’s only about ourselves. Wellbeing comes from within. Life is a game. Many don’t play fair. That’s their problem.
