As Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia reaches a frenzied crescendo and social media feeds go into monotonous-meltdown, we thought it reasonable to go back to the very beginning: the inspiration behind a look. The muse.

We asked six Australian designers which beauty icons they look to – both on and off the runway. From eclectic influencers like David Bowie to the debonair Brigitte Bardot, these style pioneers knew the foundations of striking beauty and continue to influence us today.
