It can be hard to rise above winter's prevailing slump of enthusiasm and lethargy that inevitably partners with cold, drab days. If you’ve been left feeling a little blue recently, rest assured, you’re not alone. The good news: it doesn’t require scouring the self-help section of your local bookstore to elevate your mood, you can trick your brain with some olfactory delights. If you found your happy levels went down with the summer sun, here are some scientifically proven mood-boosting ingredients, and the products that contain them, to spring you back to life.

CITRUS SMILE

Anecdotal evidence suggests that grapefruit aromas can curb depression and enhance memory. As an added bonus the scent can control your appetite when you’re about to dive into your third round of a comfort-fuelled chocolate binge. Dreary winter weather may wreak havoc on your psyche, but adding a new fragrance into the mix may be the perfect cure. Thankfully, Chanel have a new offering for us this winter. A light, delicate interpretation of the classic Chanel fragrance, Chanel Chance Eau Tendre offers soft and sparkling notes of grapefruit and quince, tinged with soft Jasmine (also a mood-booster, see below). After all, if anything is going to turn your grimace to a grin, it’s Chanel… and citrus.

PEPPERMINT PERKS

We know it can make your breath smell fresh, but the benefits of peppermint don’t stop at your mouth – it can have amazing brain health advantages too. Peppermint is commonly used by aromatherapists for its uplifting, invigorating properties. It also improves concentration and your ability to clear your mind – shifting winter’s ominous cloud.  Suti’s Peppermint Water Organic Facial Toner is a clever concoction containing only organic peppermint leaves. The result is a refreshing spicy blast of instant rejuvenation, with a bonus natural cooling effect on the skin. Spritz some on when you are feeling sluggish for an instant burst of energy. Keep one at your desk or on the bathroom cabinet for the ultimate afternoon pick-me-up.

LOVE FROM LAVENDER

Lavender is a natural wonder known for its healing properties of the mind, body, and soul. Promoting relaxation is a traditional use of lavender tea, primarily because of the soothing aroma. The University of Maryland Medical Center reported that inhaling the scent can slow the nervous system, inducing relaxation. This can help with cases of anxiety, insomnia, stress and sadness. We love the CeeCee and Bee Lavender Slumber Tub Tea for a luxurious soak. After a long rough, cold day, sprinkle the leaves into a warm bath, light some candles and nestle in with a good drop of antioxidant-full Pinot Noir. Now, that’s doing winter right.

JOY IN JASMINE

This floral favourite has serious mood-boosting benfits. A study conducted in 2010 discovered that not only does the smell of the flower create a sense of alertness, it can also serve as a way to help with depressive thoughts. Researchers found that the stimulating effect of the jasmine scent can aid in the relief of depressive feelings and can lead to a positive attitude adjustment. Find your inner happy glow with this Jasmine Candle by Diptyque. Light it up at night and prepare for a comforting fragrance of Blue Jasmine and soothing scents of the Mediterranean garden to fill the room.

CINNAMON SAVIOUR

If, in the cold discomfort of cooler seasons, you’ve coveted a warm cinnamon donut to keep you toasty, we have some great news… Cinnamon has some fantastic health benefits, including slowing down the ageing process. Easier to understand then, that in ancient times the spice was worth more than gold. But, for the purposes of improving your mood, simply smelling cinnamon can do the trick. For your daily dose of the sweet and spicy goodness, try Philosophy’s Cinnamon Buns Shower Gel. This ultra-luxurious multitasking scented shampoo, shower gel and bubble bath releases endorphins, even boasting an aphrodisiac-like effect. It also has a tendency to linger on the skin, so you’ll be doing those near you a sensory mood-improving favour.
