I’ve just got back from a three week holiday in Europe, which was absolutely amazing – but I can’t believe what the sun has done to my skin. Despite a comprehensive slathering of SPF, a sneaky crop of new freckles and pigment has popped up, scattered across my nose and cheeks. I know the best time to tackle pigment is during winter, when you’re out of the sun and skin has time to recover.

Since we’ve only got a few months left, I decide to sign up to the Clearskincare Clinics Skin Gym. Much like a fitness membership, Skin Gym allows me to come in on a monthly basis and to have my complexion analysed and reassessed, while choosing from a menu of targeted treatments to address my concerns. The best part? You have an expert guide you through a skin plan that can tackle these gripes, like my pigmentation and, almost like a personal trainer, they can coach you back into good skin health.

I front up to Clearskincare Clinic in Mosman and meet with Jess, my skin therapist. After a quick cleanse she preps my skin and examines it with a special lamp before declaring that a course of IPL will be able to sort me out in three months.

I’ve had IPL before and I love it – not only does it get rid of surface pigmentation like my Europe-induced freckles, it also kickstarts collagen and elastin production so skin ends up looking plump and radiant a few weeks later. In a perfect world I’d try and have it every year – in  winter.

A day or two later I notice that the freckles under my eyes and on my cheekbones have darkened and look like I’ve got a smattering of coffee grounds on my skin. Within five days it’s completely gone. And that’s what I love most about IPL – it works, visibly, before your eyes. You can quanitifiably see the results and it just gets better and better. I know that by taking my skin to the gym like this, my skin will be plumper, juicier, more vibrant and more hydrated than it’s been the whole year. With the monthly Crystalite and Peel along with the collagen and elastin boost I’m getting from the IPL my skin will be in better shape than ever.

The great thing about Skin Gym is you can tackle any skin issue you want – freckles, wrinkles and sun damage with a variety of treatment options from SGA (Sebaceous Gland Ablation), Fractional resurfacing, Microdermabrasion, and Radio Frequency Skin Tightening and more. It allows you to address all those things that have been annoying you and then to maintain your skin health beyond that, in a particularly purse-friendly way. Now if I could just be as disciplined with my Fitness First Gym membership, I’d be laughing.
