We’ve seen some pretty interesting (and novelty inspired) skincare ingredients pop up in the beauty sphere as of late. From fern plant to charcoal to red wine, we thought we’d seen it all. But now the ingredient on everyone’s skincare list is salmon egg…  According to New York dermatologist Anne Chapas’ study in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology, salmon eggs may be the answer to our sensitive skin prayers.

According to the study, salmon eggs have the potential to exfoliate sensitive skin without causing further redness, itchiness, or flakiness. The enzyme “gently dissolves dead skin cells on the surface of the skin to improve skin tone,” Chapas told Allure. Unlike other exfoliators, such as acids or scrubs, the enzyme only works on dead skin cells – it stops working once it encounters living tissue, she explained. “Our study showed that products containing the enzyme were better tolerated than glycolic-acid-containing creams.”

Although the studies are indeed promising, we should probably note that the study was funded by a skincare brand called Restorsea, which uses this ingredient in many of its products.

Nevertheless, a fact is a fact – and we can’t wait to see this fishy ingredient continue to pop up in the beauty world. We’ll keep our eyes peeled…
