“B: Growing up, I sort of shied away from wanting to one day be a business owner, because I had watched our mum build a business from scratch and saw first-hand how many sacrifices she had to make. Even so, part of me always thought my sister and I should team up and go into business together.

I felt that by combining forces we would make a powerful duo. When Sarah was looking for a creative outlet during the pandemic, it presented the perfect opportunity to begin something we could both be passionate about.

S: Being a stay at home mum for the last five years has made me more determined than ever to start a new career for myself. And this time I wanted to make sure it was something I was passionate about – skincare.

Being a Virgo, I am incredibly critical of myself, and from the ages of 13-17 I had consistent acne, which really affected my self-esteem. After numerous appointments with my dermatologist and trying several creams, I was put on pretty harsh medication which made my skin extremely dry, which it still is to this day. Since then, face and body oils have been my go-to, so I have used them enthusiastically for over 20 years.

B: I was always interested in the mystical side of life. I grew up reading fantasy books and watching supernatural movies, and I discovered astrology when I was 18. For me, it makes sense that my business activities incorporate those themes.

I attribute a broken engagement in late 2016 as the event that really pushed me to pursue my passion for tarot, turn it into a career, and now take it to this other level with Astromantique. At first, I used tarot as a self-healing tool, and gradually taught myself what the cards could show. Interestingly, it was the man I dated immediately after my broken engagement who really encouraged me, and made me feel confident enough to turn my passion into a business.

S: Starting our business meant research, research and more research. I spent a lot of lockdown staring at a screen, considering concepts and learning about ingredients.

I feel so proud of us having the courage to start this business from scratch. It’s taken a lot of time, sweat, tears and money to start an independent skincare brand. Over the years, we have come up with lots of different business ideas, but when we discussed the premise of a celestial skincare brand, it really stuck. It made so much sense for us both, and we felt we could create great products.

B: I believe your level of success will be determined by your level of passion. If you’re not passionate about what you’re doing, you’re wasting your time, and anything you produce will be lacklustre.

B: looking back, I honestly don’t think I would do anything differently.

It’s definitely been a hard road to get here, but I believe there are no mistakes – only lessons!

S: I would just have started this business sooner – what was I waiting for?

I need to learn to listen to Britt. Being the older sister, I tend to be more controlling and think that I know best…but on the odd occasion she has been right, haha!

S: Inspiration comes to me all the time, so for me, the difficulty is in finding the time and space to action it.

Right this moment, I have two kids who are playing in the lounge room, another child living out his Tik Tok cooking fantasy with the air fryer while his friend gives running commentary, and two British bulldogs loudly requesting treats. So it’s about trying to clear the background noise and make things happen.

B: Usually I don’t struggle to find inspiration for my work – my clients in my tarot business will do that for me! 

If I must motivate myself, though, I think about how procrastinating during the working week will ruin my weekend plans. I don’t like things hanging over my head and accumulating ‘work debt’.

B: I am inspired by people who march to the beat of their own drums.

A big one for me is Roald Dahl. He is much, much more than a children’s author with a wicked sense of humour. He was a maverick; as well as being a fighter pilot, a diplomat and brilliant author for adults, he was an inventor (he was involved in developing a device to help people with hydrocephalus, an affliction his son suffered from).

S: I admire pretty much any women who go into business. I am a huge fan of the concept of female-led start-ups in general! In fact, 99% of businesses we have used to build our company have been female-owned.

Someone I find especially inspiring is Julia Haart. I love seeing women achieve things at any age, but hearing about women changing their lives as they get older is particularly special. I am 38 now, and after many years out of the workforce, I assumed my career was over. I love hearing stories about women who continue to achieve their goals in their forties, fifties, sixties and beyond.

B: Each morning, I listen to Ho-oponopono guided meditations, which is an ancient Hawaiian healing technique. I start my day with them, and also listen to them whenever I’m feeling anxious and overwhelmed.

I have a bath, apply Astromantique FIRE Body Elixir top to toe, and then it’s time for breakfast – a coffee and a berry smoothie. I’ve always used face oil for its hydration and because it gives a dewy glow. Now, I only use Astromantique. I have a very low-maintenance beauty regime. S: If I manage to brush my hair, it is a good day!

I put on SPF each day without fail, make an oat flat white, grab a banana and am out the door. I do outdoor training three times a week, which doubles as my therapy, along with my singing lesson each week, which is great for the soul.
