Jess Hart has certainly come a long way since winning the Dolly model contest back in 2000. The New York based, Australian beauty boasts an impressive CV, counting Victoria’s Secret Angel and Vogue Australia cover girl among her stellar career highlights. She recently jetted home to Sydney to unveil her new makeup brand, Luma Cosmetics, a project she has been quietly working away at over the past two years.

When she met with Beauticate she had only just stepped off the plane and we couldn’t help but notice she looked as radiant as ever, despite the long haul flight. We had to find out her secret. Here, the self-confessed tomboy opens up about hating her red lips, wearing bronzer on her eyelids and her obsession with tinted moisturiser.

I hate that my lips are so red

So I’m always looking for the right thing for them. The LUMA sheer lipstick in nude shimmer is a favourite because it takes out the red but doesn’t dry me out. I’ve always suffered from really dry lips, which is why I think they’re so red. When I was younger my mum would try to make me put lip balm on and I thought it was the most disgusting thing in the world. Now I’m always looking for good lip balms and anything I can get my hands on.

I wear bronzer on my eyelids.

As well as on my face. I think the copper tone really brings out the blue in my eyes. I swear by the LUMA Illuminating Highlighter. I found it really hard to find a good highlighter and ours took a long time to finally get it to where we wanted.  Applying highlighter on the highs of your cheeks makes you look fresh whether you feel it or not, and putting it on your eyebrow bones can give you a bit of an oomph.

I love tinted moisturiser

but it’s hard to find a good one.  I think this is probably how the LUMA line came about. I was finding that most of the ones out there were too much like a moisturiser, didn’t have enough colour or were too shiny. I did have an amazing tinted moisturiser that I would use all the time (I probably brought it six times over) but when it was discontinued I was devastated, so I decided I had to make my own so I’ll never run out again.

I was the biggest tomboy

My sister [model Ashley Hart] and I didn’t really grow up with cosmetics. In recent years I’ve had a few key products that I loved and I thought, “Why don’t I just create my own ideal, basic kit?” – That’s what LUMA Cosmetics is.  My brand always had to feel easy. It’s been a long time in the works and I’m very happy that we’re actually here because there were many times when we questioned whether we would pull it off. I just hope everyone loves it as much as I do.

I was very lucky with my skin growing up

I still am. I feel bad for girls that have problematic skin because it would change my day, it would change my life, so I think I’m really lucky.  I thought moisturising was a big step a few years ago when I started doing it and now it’s pretty much all I do.  I’ll just wash my face with water and a wet face cloth then apply Embryolisse 24hr Miracle Crème Moisturiser. When I’m flying I really pack on the moisturiser and lather on a fair bit of Dr Haunschka hand cream.  I have two little sprays I can’t travel without – Nu Skin Moisture Mist and SK-II Facial Treatment Essence. I discovered La Prairie’s Eye & Lip Portable Perfector when I was at the airport. I love it for those days when you’re not wearing any makeup and you just want a little bit of a glow.

I’ve started seeing a new facialist in New York

Her name is Georgia Louise and I go and see her whenever I can.  She got me on to this rose quartz face massager – her own little invention. It comes with instructions on the movements that you should do and it’s great for draining but also shapes as well. I suffer from really bad sinus so its great for that, but I use it in a way that’s really painful so I kind of dread doing it.  I’ll often have a headache after using it because it’s detoxifying, however later on I’ll feel really good.

I hate getting my hair done

I’m too impatient for it.  I’m lucky because my natural colour is ashy blonde so I can leave it for a long time between salon visits. I only get my hair cut about every six months.  I’ve found the Kerastase Resistance range is really good for blondes.  When I as 13, just before I started modeling, I dyed my hair black and shaved it; I do regret that. They had to just dye it brown and wait for it to grow out. I was a brunette for the first six years of my modeling career.

I’m not into smoothies and juices

I just try and eat well when I can. I like working out and I like eating well too, but I also like eating shit. I have a trainer, I go to spin class, I run, I do Pilates – I feel like you have to change it up.  I’m really bad with vitamins and I go through a stage where I’m like “I’ll take vitamins and buy everything,” but it only ever lasts about two days before I’m over it.
