Robyn Lawley isn’t afraid to speak her mind. Take the infamous ‘thigh gap’ issue for instance, just ask her and she’ll tell you exactly what she thinks about it. We spoke with the US-based, Australian model while she was in town. With those lustrous locks, Robyn couldn't be a more perfect fit to be an ambassador for Pantene. When we shot the 25 year-old beauty, she had just revealed she was six months pregnant with her first hub (ed's note: she had Ripley in February 2015). It’s no wonder she was positively glowing here in her exclusive shoot with Beauticate.
So you have to protect it. These days if a makeup artist comes at me with a makeup wipe, I have to back away as my skin just kills me afterwards. I get the occasional pimple but I’m lucky that I’ve never had acne. My skin is quite dry and sensitive which can be an issue. I’ve had a few incidents where I’ve been accidentally burnt or had an allergic reaction to a product so now I’m really careful.
by mixing olive oil and castor oil. I lather it on then wipe it off with a hot face wash, which also removes any makeup. I think oil is great for the skin and people are crazy when they say you should only go for oil-free skincare and makeup. I love Aesop’s Camellia Nut Facial Hydrating Cream. When I’m on the plane my skin gets incredibly dry so it’s perfect for travelling. During the day I use SK-II Stempower Moisturiser and Facial Treatment Essence. I like their treatment facemasks too which I use every few weeks. I’m always tempted to apply the mask on a long haul flight as I know Cate Blanchett does it, but I’m worried I’ll frighten the children!
In New York, Alana Rubin. She works with a lot of models and does the best facial ever; it’s three hours long and she never leaves your side. I wish I could see her every month but it can be tricky with both of our packed schedules. Alana also has a serum line which she recently got me onto.
And having a ‘thigh gap’ is important to people; something I often forget. A while ago I was featured on a pro ‘thigh gap’ Facebook page. My friends saw it and told me about it so I read the comments and they were like “she’s a pig, she’s vulgar, how dare you put her on our feed.” I don’t really have a ‘thigh gap’, it was more like I was just bending forward in the photo so it was an illusion of one. My thighs do touch!
So I literally just wrote a whole thing saying how I don’t want a ‘thigh gap’, I don’t need that. I’m a model, I travel the world, I get paid to look the way I look without needing this and you don’t need this, it’s ridiculous. I wasn’t going to respond at first but then I thought “no”. I got bullied, that was cyber bulling at its most glorious and I wanted to say my piece, that’s why I spoke out.
Because I’m constantly travelling and ordering random room service in hotels. I think health is important, as you are what you eat. I mean, if you’re going to eat junk all the time you’re going to feel like shit, but it’s about balance. I definitely do need to have kale, tomatoes and avocados in my diet (which are my favourite foods anyway), but I’m not going to punish myself for eating a meat pie.
I’m super excited about it, as it was my baby for two years. People might think that I just signed off on it but actually it was the complete opposite, I did everything – the photography, styling and the cooking, all in my New York apartment kitchen. I was recipe testing everything so sometimes I’d eat five lemon meringue pies in a day! So decadent.
Sometimes you just have to show the client what they can’t always imagine by wearing makeup, especially in the plus size world where they need to see you fully done-up otherwise they don’t understand it.
When doing my own makeup, I’ll start by prepping my skin first making sure it’s really moisturised. I’ll apply one of my many NARS illuminators on my cheekbones to get that shimmer effect, followed by Chanel’s Vitalumiere Foundation, YSL’s Touché Éclat (for highlighting) and a bit of blush. For me, lips are the most important feature and as I have a double lip line, I prefer to line my lips with a M.A.C. Cosmetics or NARS Lip Pencil. I love lots of mascara and I think eyebrows are one thing that everyone should do. I fill in my brows with a brow pencil and set them with brow gel. I finish with M.A.C. Cosmetics Mineralise Skin Finish powder.
And it gives me confidence. When I was 15 I used to dye it platinum blonde to get all the boys! But then I started modeling and they asked me to go back to my natural brunette colour. Since then I haven’t dyed my hair.
All models aspire to do beauty campaigns because it’s the crème de la crème of the modeling world. It’s a huge honour to be Pantene’s new ambassador and it’s a first for anyone of my size to represent a beauty brand. Not only that, it’s a brand I’ve been using myself for years. I first discovered Pantene’s Ice Shine line in France when I was seventeen, so I have a good relationship with the product. I swear by the Ice Shine shampoo, conditioner and treatment. “
