I’m turning 40 in a few weeks. In an existential freak out last year I had a fantasy that I would be the fittest and strongest I’d ever been. A few weeks ago when November loomed suddenly I went into exercise panic mode. I was nowhere near my fittest, strongest ever. How to firm up and FAST? I knew the answer and was very lucky to have the means… or should I say the machine.

Let’s rewind a bit. Last year at the start of lockdown I got my hands on a Hypervibe Whole Body Vibration trainer. This was VERY exciting. I first came across vibration training about ten years ago when I was reviewing the newly launched Powerplate. I was loaned a big clunky machine for my apartment, which shook the whole building I was living in at the time. It did, however, have great effects on my body, supercharging simple exercises with the addition of vibration.

SO, HOW DOES IT WORK?

By exercising on a vibrating plate (think squats, pushups, planks, bridges etc) you are putting additional load on your muscles. On a proper machine, the plate vibrates in an upward motion (not side to side like some of the cheaper knock offs). By accelerating against earth gravity (which is pulling us downward) increased loading is placed onto our muscles and bones. This stimulates muscle and bone growth, weight loss and other benefits.

The effects of whole body vibration (this upward motion) have been used by NASA to help keep astronauts strong in space, and there have been numerous research papers on its effects, which include increased muscle strength and power, increased bone density, reduced body fat and reduced aches and pains. It also helps with circulation and in turn lymphatic drainage and cellulite. I noticed this as soon as I started using it ten years ago and found that I was able to build strength much faster than I did with regular training. In fact muscle contractions occur at more than 25 times per second. And with less effort. They say that 10 minutes on a vibration trainer is equivalent to 30-45 minutes of conventional training.

After years of pining after the $10,000 machines that I would occasionally use in gyms I discovered a home machine that was infinitely more affordable: Hypervibe G10 mini is under $1,500 and is one of the few home machines that have performed alongside top machines for the proven health benefits.

It’s also small and portable, and fits nicely behind my couch. For the last couple of months I’ve stepped up my Hypervibe training to just two to three times a week and already seen a marked difference. Everything is just firmer – waist, thighs, tummy. My cellulite has definitely reduced and I have definition in my biceps for the first time in years and I feel stronger than ever.

I’M PICKIN’ UP GOOD VIBRATIONS

The sensation is pretty crazy, and does take some getting used to. Sometimes you’ll get a bit itchy, which is the blood flow increasing all over. Sometimes I have to stop and give my upper arms a good scratch before continuing. I love it because I know how good the results are! You also need to make sure you use the toilet before you go or your bladder will get tested. All your exercises feel just a tiny bit harder but the good news is you only have to do each exercise for a minute or two, which makes it achievable.

The machine is also awesome for loosening up tight muscles and recovery after exercise. Sometimes I’ll just sit or stretch on it and it helps deepen the stretch and it feels like it’s jiggling out any lactic acid or DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness). I love to do a bit of cat/cow yoga pose on it to help get into my shoulders.

The Hypervibe G10 connects via Bluetooth to an app on your smartphone and there are a series of exercise programmes for everything from strength to cellulite (love that one). After training on it I feel amazing. I don’t know if it’s the endorphins or increased circulation but it gives me a happy high that I never achieve with weight or resistance training.

I’ve also experimented with my own workouts. Barre workouts are awesome on the G10 and I often adapt Barre Body online and pilates workouts to the Hypervibe with some incredible results. The kids love to get involved and it’s quite fun to pump the music and do a little routine. Even Damo’s been getting involved lately after seeing the results I’ve been having.

With my birthday only 3 weeks ago I’m planning on stepping up the Hypervibe to five times a week and I’m really excited to see the results. The fact that it’s only ten minutes makes it totally doable and it doesn’t feel like a total time suck.

After reading the research around bone density and preventing osteoporosis I’m planning on using the Hypervibe for the rest of my life. It’s an incredible tool to have in your bio-hacking arsenal and while it’s not cheap, when you consider the myriad health benefits, it’s a no-brainer investment for your health.
