For fragrance lovers, the release of a new Chanel No.5 film is almost as exciting as having the perfume itself on your vanity. But this time we’re all buzzing just a little more because, Lily-Rose Depp and No.5’s latest incarnation, L’EAU is blowing our beauty mind. Daughter of Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis, it’s no surprise that she’s captivating on screen… But, wow.

Looking beyond her 17 years (she skipped her awkward teen years… shout-out to our own early years of butterfly clips and blue hair mascara that can’t even believe this), Lily-Rose is seen living it up at a VIP party, heading a Chanel revolution, channeling an inner pop-queen and probably holding a light bulb too close to the hot part…

Eschewing their normal linear narrative, the film, directed by Johan Renck, gives us a patchwork of beautifully shot scenes to tell the story for us to interpret for ourselves.

“When I was young, fragrance ads were the most daring. I wanted to recapture that here,” says Renck. “Now more than ever, flaunting your ‘difference’ is the only way to make an impact. It was the central idea throughout the film. I had my heart even more set on it since I have been known to wear N°5 myself on occasion. To me, this fragrance is very mysterious, sensual and incredibly powerful.”

“N°5 L’EAU [is] the new generation of Chanel N°5,” explains Thomas du Pré de Saint Maur, Head of Global Creative Resources for Chanel Fragrance and Beauty. “[It’s] alive, evolving, and reinventing itself, and thus more surprising than we can imagine.”

The 17-year-old is the youngest to face the brand’s film, following Chanel’s first film heroine French actress Catherine Deneuve in the 1970s, to a very memorable Nicole Kidman and, more recently, Gisele Bündchen (both directed by Baz Luhrmann).
