Occupying a coveted corner position on Manly’s Pittwater Road is eco-luxe hair and beauty salon Bare Beauty House.  Stretched over two levels of a converted heritage terrace, the salon is a true one stop shop offering expert colour, facials, massages and flawless nails using sustainable and cruelty-free products.

Inside it’s all earthy tones from the raw brickwork, tan leather styling chairs and potted plants. The back mani/pedi room opens to a leafy courtyard that can play host to private bookings and pamper parties.

Since moving to the Northern Beaches in 2020, I’ve become quite the regular at Bare. Owner Naomi Browner looks after my cut and colour, and I love that I can multi-task beauty and hair. The Dazzle Dry manicures are some of the best I’ve had: the polish is hard wearing, almost as resilient as gels but much less damaging. Plus they’re dry in five minutes, so you don’t smudge anything when you’re fishing out your keys.

Today I’m here for a colour touch up and cut and a scrub/massage which I’ve scheduled for myself as a little mid-winter treat. I head up the staircase into the hush of one of two sage-toned beauty rooms.  The lights are low and the bed is cosy as my therapist Kana begins her work, scrubbing each limb with a deliciously scented salt scrub. The beauty treatments use either organic brand Eve Taylor (today I’m enjoying the scrub and oil) or Australian clean cosmeceutical Synergie – which I’m a huge fan of. I’m relieved to find that the scrub is quite dry (with just a touch of oil) so I don’t get as cold as I usually do during body treatments.

I’m lulled nearly to sleep with Kana’s rhythmic salty strokes and when she’s finished, need to rouse myself to get up and have a shower. I marvel at my baby soft skin, deliciously coated with the oil, even after I step out of the shower. I settle back onto the bed for another hour of massage bliss, nodding off into a near-meditative state. Kana increases the pressure perfectly on my request and works out some stubborn knots in my neck and shoulder. I stumble down the stairs into daylight, happily submitting to my root touch up with Rebecca (Naomi JUST had a beautiful baby boy.)

The team uses Oway, which is a biodynamic organic hair range from Italy that performs as well as other professional colours but is gentle on my sensitive scalp. My greys covered and brassiness toned, and Frankie sets to work giving me a beautiful blowdry before finishing it off with a curling tong.

And with that, it’s back into the world, feeling totally renewed and reminded, yet again, of the importance of scheduling those little moments of self care for ourselves. If you can combine a little pampering with your usual beauty-maintenance, as you can at Bare Beauty House, then it’s a no-brainer.
