Victoria Avenue in Albert Park is the sort of street where the beach is close enough to feel it and the shopfronts are still worth stopping at. Skinologie is one of them. Inside it's all light and immaculate surfaces, saved from feeling like a laboratory by a large and very fragrant floral arrangement at the door.
Dr Ceylan Yilmaz and the Team
Skinologie is run by Dr Ceylan Yilmaz with a team of dermal clinicians. The clinic's position is that skin doesn't take a one-size-fits-all approach, and the booking process is built to enforce that: nobody is sold a treatment before the imaging is done.
The Visia Consultation
Every first appointment starts with a form, a detailed one, and then Visia. You rest your chin on the machine and it takes a series of 3D photographs, mapping pigmentation, texture and dehydration, including the parts sitting below the surface where you can't see them.
The images are unsparing. Each concern is emphasised, so pigmentation shows up several shades darker than it looks in your bathroom mirror. It's also where the clinic separates melasma, which has a hormonal cause and is often triggered in pregnancy, from ordinary sun damage. That distinction changes what you're offered. Some treatments are only appropriate for one, or only after a stretch of preparatory homecare, and the clinic will say no on the day if the imaging calls for it.
What's on the Menu
The Hero is Dr Yilmaz's own treatment, combining microdermabrasion, laser and a peel.
The gentler route is a lactic peel followed by sonophoresis, an ultrasound instrument used to help an antioxidant serum penetrate, then a peptide mask. It runs about an hour on a pre-warmed bed, with a shoulder massage somewhere in the middle. You're asked at the start whether you'd like to be talked through each step or left in peace, which is a small question that tells you a lot about a clinic.
Skincare and Aftercare
Treatments finish with a hydrating serum and SPF, and a written regime for your own skin. The clinic stocks UltraMD A Refining Serum, an Ultraceuticals vitamin A sold only through doctor-owned clinics, alongside a vitamin C serum. Keep the vitamin C in the fridge.
