In this episode of Beautiful Inside I sit down with the legendary Poppy King, better known as the Lipstick Queen. Few people understand the emotional weight of a single beauty product the way Poppy does, and our conversation is a love letter to the humble lipstick and everything it can do for the way we feel.

I first met Poppy years ago, interviewing her for Vogue at the launch of her second brand, Lipstick Queen. She had already become a household name in Australian beauty, and meeting her again for this episode felt like a full circle moment.

A teenage prodigy who changed Australian beauty

Poppy started her first company, Poppy Industries, at just 19. It was an audacious thing to do, and it worked. She quickly became one of the leading names in the Australian beauty industry and was named Young Australian of the Year in 1995.

What strikes me most is how clear her vision was from the start. She was never interested in a full face of product. She was interested in the lip, and in what a single, perfect colour could do for a woman's confidence.

The fall, and the rebuild

Poppy's journey was not all smooth sailing. After expanding Poppy Industries to the United States, the business hit serious financial difficulties and she had to close it. She is wonderfully honest in this episode about how hard that was.

But she bounced back, launching Lipstick Queen in 2006, a brand she eventually sold. Now, with her eponymous brand Poppy King, she has come full circle, using her original matte formulas and the same Melbourne manufacturer she worked with in the nineties.

Lipstick as psychology, not vanity

Poppy's perspective on beauty is unlike anyone else's, and a lot of that comes from her father, who was a psychiatrist. He instilled in her a deep curiosity about the human mind, and she has carried that into everything she makes.

For Poppy, a lipstick is never just a cosmetic. It is a small act of self-definition. She weaves fairy tales and personal transformation into her storytelling, treating each colour as a journey of self-discovery and empowerment rather than a quick fix.

Why this conversation stayed with me

What I loved about talking to Poppy is that she gives you permission to take beauty seriously without taking yourself too seriously. A red lip is not frivolous. It can be the thing that helps you walk into a room as the version of yourself you want to be.

If you take one thing from this episode, let it be that the products we reach for every day carry more meaning than we give them credit for, and that a little ritual at the mirror can quietly change your whole day.
