Ettore Sottsass never designed a hair salon, but Hues on Swan Street is what it might have looked like. Architect Adriana Hanna built the Richmond space as a love letter to Memphis, blocking it out in bold flat colour and geometric forms that Dezeen and Wallpaper both came running to photograph. Pinks meet primaries meet clean hard edges. It should read as a gimmick and somehow does not, because the colour work at the basins is as considered as the colour on the walls. You go for a cut and end up sitting inside a piece of design history. Loud, precise, unrepeatable. Richmond's most photographed salon, and it has earned every frame.
