On one of the busiest stretches of the Pacific Highway, behind a pink-and-white art-deco facade, is a former Commonwealth Bank that Gillian Adams turned into a temple. She was doing day spas before Sydney had the words for it. Inside, original deco detailing meets antiques, fresh flowers and a Romanesque hydrotherapy pool that would not look out of place in ancient Rome. The signature is the Elemis Lime and Ginger scrub with deep-tissue massage, two hours of body brushing, hot oil and frangipani. Elemis and Babor run the shelves, Vichy showers rinse you down, and a garden cafe serves high tea when you are done. Salon, spa and lunch under one roof. Worth the drive north, and then some.
